Our new investigation (linked below) finds that nearly 6,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in southern Lebanon, around 80% of them since Israel’s Oct. 1 invasion. I’ll go into some of our findings and work here 🧵: Image To conduct this analysis, we relied on @coreymaps and @jamonvdh’s excellent damage maps and estimates, which are based on Sentinel-1 satellite radar analysis. Combined with Microsoft building footprints, they allow you to make a map of damage (in red) that can look like this: Image

Earlier this month, I read Ezra Klein's interview with Franklin Foer, the author of a recent sweeping piece in The Atlantic looking back at the Biden administration's Gaza policy, in which Foer made an interesting claim about Biden's "red line" on Rafah in March. Klein pointed out that Biden said invading Rafah would be a red line, and then Israel went ahead and did it anyway. Foer replied that, from the Biden team's perspective, they did enforce the red line, by making Israel alter its invasion plan and do it in a "pinpoint way." Image

New: Two sources and a Post video analysis reveal how a local police officer, shooting from the ground a little over 100 meters away, fired a key first shot at Trump shooter Thomas Crooks, after which Crooks never fired again: wapo.st/3WI7Ul3 A member of Butler County's SWAT team, standing outside behind the stage and using an M4 rifle, fired a shot at Crooks from around 110 meters away less than a second after Crooks ended a volley of eight shots, The Post found. The Post analyzed videos, satellite imagery and terrain to build a 3D model and reconstruct Trump's attempted assassination. We found multiple security gaps, including obstructed views and a failure to prevent the shooter from accessing the roof 🧵wapo.st/3Lwyt6k How Thomas Matthew Crooks got onto the roof a little more than 400 feet from Trump remains unclear, but it was the day's first and arguably biggest failure. Bystanders spotted him crawling up the roof about two minutes before he opened fire, and tried to warn police:

In Gaza, Israel has waged what may be the 21st century's most destructive war, a new visual investigation by The Post has found, destroying more buildings in seven weeks than in Aleppo in three years or in Mosul or Raqqa in one year.

Free link: wapo.st/3TErVYK The Post also found that Israel has repeatedly bombed near hospitals, which are protected under the laws of war. Satellite imagery showed dozens of craters near 17 of northern Gaza's 28 hospitals, including 10 suggesting the use of 2,000-pound bombs, the largest in regular use.

NBC reports on the images of Palestinian men stripped to their underwear and detained in Beit Lahiya, Gaza.

One is Diaa al-Kahlout, a journalist for @The_NewArab's Arabic service. Others are relatives of Hani Almadhoun, a DC-based fundraiser for UNRWA: nbcnews.com/news/world/isr…
Image Almadhoun said his three relatives, all civilians, were by the Israelis less than 24 hours after their detention. They had been taken to an IDF-controlled wedding venue not far away, where they were interrogated and photographed before their release.

Earlier this week, a journalist in Gaza made one of the war's grimmest discoveries: four dead babies, their bodies decomposing on the beds in Al-Nasr Hospital where they had been left. This is the story of what happened: [paywall free] wapo.st/47GKLm8
Image It was Nov. 10 and the height of the Israeli military's assault on Gaza City. The medical complex housing Al-Nasr Hospital was surrounded by Israeli forces, and director Bakr Qaoud said they'd sent an ultimatum: Get out or be bombarded.

The Oct. 7 Hamas assault on Israel was the deadliest single attack in the nation's history. Our team has spent the weeks since reconstructing it in detail. Our new visual investigation shows how Israel's vaunted "Iron Wall" crumbled [free link]: wapo.st/3QHjicL
Image Our investigation shows how Israel's over-reliance on a high-tech but lightly-defended fence — equipped with remote-controlled guns and far-seeing cameras, and upgraded in 2021 for about $1 billion — enabled Hamas to quickly overcome it and storm through.

Fighters in Gaza launched rockets that flew in the direction of al-Ahli Hospital 44 seconds before an explosion there killed at least 100 people on Oct. 17, The Post found.

Our comprehensive new look into the worst strike of the Gaza war thus far: wapo.st/3tG0IKf We triangulated the rocket launch to a place southwest of al-Ahli Hospital that matched the location the IDF has identified as the launch site of a misfired rocket that hit the hospital. We also geolocated the barrage’s initial path and found it flew in the hospital's direction. Image
