There is a lot of discussion right now about Ukraine potentially receiving the ability to manufacture Patriot air defense systems under license.
That sounds important. But unless you understand what the Patriot actually is, what it can do, and what licensed production could eventually mean for Ukraine, it is difficult to understand just how significant this could become.
So, letβs talk about it.

It is an entire integrated air defense system. A Patriot battery includes powerful radar, command and control equipment, communications systems, launchers, interceptor missiles, power generation equipment, and the trained personnel required to operate and maintain it.
The radar searches the sky for threats. The command system evaluates those threats and determines what needs to be engaged. Then an interceptor is launched to destroy the incoming target.
