meds and therapy won’t work if you don’t have iron. It’s the most common nutrient deficiency in the world and is very common even in the developed world. Serum ferritin is a reasonable blood check though not as specific as iron studies. I’ve had multiple referrals for supposed total treatment refractory depression that turned out to be iron deficiency. Signs of iron deficiency like pica, anxiety, shortness of breath, restless legs, low exercise tolerance had been ignored for years and not asked about.

Best cold meds thread: 1) ibuprofen
really try to avoid taking this too much because it’s too easy to relieve the aches and pains & torch your kidneys forever but when your throat is killing you & your teeth ache this will do the trick. Stay hydrated and use no more than recommended on a full stomach

this article is a bizarre combination of some thoughtful reporting on functional disorders (the first case she mentions is a very classic example) and also lots of factual inaccuracies about ME/CFS and Long COVID Some of the research on long COVID is a mess though so it’s easy to use that to throw “oh it’s in your head” at people.

FYI got this from someone I followed, verified account who it looks like might have been hacked, retweeting only Twitter verified the first 6-7 tweets so it looks a bit legit. Link asked for Twitter password. Text from a DM saying Twitt... Relatively sophisticated for an online scam, using a verified account, making sure last tweets made it look legit, and the website it links to is clean and professional looking with no misspellings.

Coffee studies are fun because people who drink more coffee tend to smoke more, drink more alcohol, exercise less, and do all sorts of unhealthy things so the healthy user bias that plagues most dietary research is absent. I say this as someone who does not drink coffee. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When the system is down…post COVID impacts in societal mental health with KikiChang MD. Post COVID fatigue, insomnia, joint disorders, concentration and residual symptoms are very common, less in post-vaccinated.

I met Michael Hutchence once. For a brief summer I joined a hobby crew team in Austin… didn’t last long because I’m 5’4” and the boats are built for average 5’9” so it’s like being on a rack the whole time. But we were carrying the boat out behind the Four Seasons for practice. And Michael was staying at the Four Seasons for his INXS concert and he said hi. Nice fellow and super talented and what seems like an inexplicable sad end though we never really know.

Herd immunity doesn’t work for COVID or other coronaviruses which we knew in 2020 but ignored. Here’s a commentary on a paper nih.gov/news-events/ne…

Look if y’all want to eat total shit and want your kids to eat crap then go for processed cereals and sugary baked beans and chips and whatever. If you don’t, the don’t, but if you are the former don’t pretend to be a good health aficionado. Kelloggs is not a health badge of honor. If you like carbs eat grits or oatmeal! Actual real food and not puffed grains fired out of a gun at 800 degrees and sprayed with vitamins so it doesn’t deplete yours.

For those wondering about my mom she is still in the hospital but they never treated her for COVID except for a few hours of oxygen last Sunday. She’s recovered from the virus and just needs to get stronger to get back to PT after her stroke. Because she was a nursing home bounceback and COVID+ dispo has been slow, which is better, honestly. The higher level of staff at the hospital is good though the visiting hours are very limited due to COVID.

Well on ER the psychiatrist got several people killed, including the 4th year medical student. Pretty sure one of the writers of ER had a bad experience with psychiatry because they wrote the most incompetent ED psychiatrist ever. The most competent psychiatrists were the forensic psych in the Law and Order series.

[many expletives deleted] Mom is in the hospital with COVID pneumonia. She is triple vaxxed but is 80 and was in a skilled nursing facility following a stroke. She was recovering from the stroke until last couple days. Dad was only visitor so she must have been infected by staff. If you are a healthcare provider, a nurse, an aide, anyone in a skilled nursing facility please get vaccinated and wear a mask :(

The complete dichotomy in responses of quote tweets is just amazing. A bunch of “yeah, duh” vs “this psychiatrist wants you to live a life of masking and depersonalization for the man” get a grip second group Me: it would be cool if we could have social voluntary masking in crowded public spaces in the winter

I think we should normalize people being okay with masking on public transport and extra HEPA air filters everywhere. Am I a doomer? No I just think it’s amazing we learned how to kill the flu, at least for a while. “Oh that doomer doctor wants us to stop dumping chamber pots into the street let’s get back to normal before this cholera epidemic”

Faux fur and faux leather and faux wool are petroleum products. Wool especially is a great sustainable product and domesticated sheep must be sheared or they get skin diseases and other issues. I love wool socks in the winter. 🥶 Icebreaker has great clothes I still wear pieces from 10 years ago icebreaker.com/en-us/home

The “tree equity” debate is telling. Dems manage to message a program that sounds awesome with a name that is bound to grind some teeth. “Planting trees in urban and underserved areas” is great! Everyone loves planting trees. …the “if you’re grinding teeth at the name “tree equity” you’re a racist” comeback is not helpful. Do you want votes or not? Talk to people where they are coming from not from where you want them to be?

Skeptimed Twitter is going after my favorite supplement lately…magnesium. I think it can be useful in many circumstances and most people don’t get the RDA so pretty harmless. It’s definitely useful for muscle cramps, sometimes for PMS stuff, people waste it like crazy when they are stressed as anyone treating an ICU patient can attest because you have that Mag in a drip.

Put all my ingredients into the instant pot and set the time and pressure but forgot to push start so when I went to check on it, it was off and cold 😭 Chili spice: 2 tbs cumin, 2 tbs chili powder, 1 tbs better than bouillon, 2 tsp smoked paprika, 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1/2-1 tsp cayenne depending on company, hot sauce to taste.

The new world: masks in public transit. High quality (N95 masks or KN95 masks) for immune compromised in public, including 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Wear a surgical mask if you have cold symptoms and are going out. Low hanging fruit and would do a lot of good. More flu shots. Regular LFT Covid and flu testing during flu seasons. There’s no reason we can’t reduce flu deaths with a few modifications.
