It’s easy to make fun of the many people who fell for an obvious scam, but it points to a deeper problem regarding cryptocurrencies, preventing their widespread adoption: discerning scams and non-scams. 1/ The core crypto community seems to have a solid understanding of what’s reputable and what’s a likely scam. But to the outside observer, aka to most people on the planet, it can be hard to parse. The muggles who are dipping their toes in crypto are lacking this necessary info. 2/

Oh god I’m just catching up now — the shooter in Buffalo cited a paper on the genetics of intelligence?!

COULD WE NOW MAYBE TALK ABOUT HOW THE ENTIRE FIELD OF IQ RESEARCH IS NOTHING BUT BUNK SCIENCE

WOULD THIS FINALLY BE A GOOD TIME FOR THAT YES Yeah yeah it’s fine, researchers can’t help if people use their papers for radicalization. But IQ research is a waste of time to begin with and too many of its scientists seem to love writing for f***ing Quillette. It shouldn’t be taken seriously by anyone.

As many of you know, I'm freelance training scientists how to communicate their work on (and off) social media. One of the segments discussed is social media crisis managment, aka handling a shitstorm.

Now, I assume the material that I am teaching is proprietary so that... 1/ I can't just divulge it here, but I also always add two things that are based on my own personal experience and that I would like to share with you. Here's the things I've learned from observing and handling social media shitstorms: 2/

Tried to post a video review & an audio stream and nothing really worked — so it’ll have to be a regular ol’ thread instead: here’s my review of the upcoming book “Hurts so good: the science and culture of pain on purpose” by @voraciousbrain! 1/ First of all: I’m biased in that I’ve consulted with Leigh on some of the science facts in the book. In fact, you’ll find a description of the time they visited me in Tallahassee, and I’m proud of the kind acknowledgment they included 2/

1 Like = 1 genuine German insult

They’ll all sound funny, some might only be known regionally, and I might not know the underlying meaning for all of them.
Please use irresponsibly.

#LetsDoThis #GermanInsults 1) First the one you probably already know: if you’ve heard that Backpfeifengesicht (~ BUCK-phyfen-guh-SEEKHT) means “a face in dire need of a slap,” that’s exactly right. #GermanInsults

As a pain researcher, I'm honestly wondering what he thinks the right answer is here. Let's review some of the most important facts, shall we?
First, defining pain is a bit of an issue. You can have pain signals in the nerves without any perceived pain and vice versa. 1/7 That's why doctors say, correctly, that the best measure of pain is asking someone "how bad is your pain." It's the best method we have!
Now you might be wondering, if that's the case, how would we ever know if an infant or animal is in pain? And that is, in fact, complicated: 2/

Alright, as inspired by @artologica and encouraged by @snapdragon830:

1 like = 1 unusual German word or phrase

(I might go slow, as I want to make them as interesting as possible, and I’ll try not to recycle ones that I’ve already posted about on other occasions) 1) “vom Leder ziehen”: to loudly complain about something or rip somebody a new one — literally “to pull out of the leather” in reference to pulling a gun from its holster
