This is Dodo Theory: straight cis white men are the worst at threat assessment because they are subject to fewer threats than everybody else.

They’re flightless island birds who are vulnerable to unexpected rats. Even if you put rights and ethics aside, you’d be a fool to mostly hire straight white cis Christian men to assess general threats - you need a very diverse group with a diverse set of experiences

It’s embarrassing that I’m confident many of my weird internet friends could do a MUCH better job of conducting background checks than “official US government intelligence analysts” I used to be wary of saying this, as maybe I was missing something, but it’s been a while and you know what, I’ve made up my mind: internet OSINT dweebs and furries are much better at this than the USG

My other big complaint about MA: rich people have privatized almost all of the coast, which means there’s vicious competition for the tiny number of public beaches.

(I’m from CA, which does not tolerate this shit).

trib.al/RgbyifC It’s rather cruelly ironic that I live closer to the ocean in MA than I have in a long time but barely go to the beach because it’s such an enormous pain in the ass

this seems a small price to pay to get to annoy the shit out of Steven Pinker “Hey Lil’ Steve, I’ve been writing a theme song for you with a kazoo - and you’re contractually obliged to have to hear it.”

I don’t like beer the flavor is acceptable at times but I think I have a very mild hops intolerance, so I drink it and just get both regretful and bloated

Yeah, it’s very much standard PRC stuff - but does provoke questions about what happens when the thing in question (small drones) are so politically charged and vital to both civilian and military interests around the globe. (And when the only really viable industry player - when it comes to price, quality, availability, etc is Chinese)

Here’s another story claiming that Chinese sales of drones (including DJI products) to Russia: DJI denies it and says that it hasn’t sold direct to Russia since April 16th.

nytimes.com/2023/03/21/bus… This seems like the same data repository that we’ve been seeing stories to this effect from for the last month and a half.

It’s true SVB didn’t get a bailout and no taxpayer cash was used (good).

It’s also true our society desperately needs to allow irresponsible, arrogant VCs and techbros to experience genuinely painful consequences for their failures.

THAT’S what many people were hoping for. I don’t think most people cheering on the prospect of loathsome tech VCs experiencing a consequence care all that much about the logistics: they’d just like to see some evidence that these men are allowed to fail in ways they actually care about.

Techbro attempts to defend Silicon Valley as a force for good, and the best he can come up with is “Patreon.”

this gets funnier and funnier every time I see it. yeah man, nothing says a profound contribution to society like “we invented a middleman platform that you humanities worms can use to scrape out a living, because our other platforms devastated the market for actual journalism jobs”

Techbros are in such denial about the fact that the public largely dislikes them that they’re trying to convince themselves us critics are all bots.

This is peak comedy.

Hey, wanna see The World’s Thiccest Tree? It’s around 1500 years old and it is definitely the most wide-beamed tree I’ve ever seen. The local birds, unsurprisingly, go nuts for it.

please admire my new rug from Oaxaca.

doing my small part to fight back against my generations disturbing lack of interest in beautiful hand-made rugs. (for shame). I always wondered how they designed those rugs with birds and other figures on them - and now I know.

very grateful to Oaxaca for reminding me, in the grim post-Covid area, that there are SOME places on earth that are still cool, where cool people do cool things ImageImageImageImage these places are not in Boston and are - let us get real - ever more scarce in the US

Many tech bros have spent the last decade CONSTANTLY, PUBLICLY cackling about how they have zero sympathy for dumb losers who don’t have $400K jobs - and now they’re surprised no one feels sorry for them?

Reap what you sow. “wait are you telling me if I extend zero solidarity or support to other people and brag about how I’m doing it all the time, those other people will laugh at me when I ask for solidarity and support in my time of need?”

The problem is that many of us are completely over constantly seeing special little baby tech boys get repeatedly bailed out, while everyone else gets bupkis. Like yes, no one should be this vulnerable to the whims of capricious fart socks like Silicon Valley’s Great Men - but why are they so special?

ah, nothing like that sense of profound millennial numbness to yet another American banking crisis cool, cool, call me when half of Palo Alto has been set aflame by marauding bands of Chip-Beast Warriors, i guess

it’s not like I actually have property values to protect over here

the strange, perverse moment when you’re in Mexico and are struck with the sudden urge to eat an objectively repulsive Taco Bell taco Then again, a Taco Bell soft taco is pretty much in an entirely different phylum than a Mexican taqueria taco

As Sam Bendett just informed me, Russian Telegram channels are claiming that DJI drones and other Chinese small drone models are suddenly no longer available for Russian customers on AliExpress. (Sam is still awaiting Twitter getting his account back from a hacker).

Damn, this fresh-made squid ink and shrimp pasta with sour orange tomato sauce at Carboni Merida was fantastic. n. Didn’t get a photo, but my dad’s seared fish with sour orange/white wine sauce and my mom’s homemade ravioli were also fantastic. Really liked this not-sweet Chilean rose, too.
