Last week, FAIR Legal sent a letter to Principal Hoffman at Mt. Ararat High School in Maine regarding skin-color-based affinity groups reportedly being facilitated by faculty members at Mt. Ararat High School.

We received a report via with a screenshot of a notice to students that says, in part, "Affinity groups allow students who share any identity - usually a marginalized identity - to gather and talk in a safe space about issues related to that identity. . . The first group planned will be for students who identify as students of color."FAIRtransparency.orgImage Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, from which Title VI was derived, prohibit public schools and federally-funded entities from separating students based on skin color.

Title VI provides: No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.Image

On Monday, @deanza_college voted out Dr. Tabia Lee, who was serving her dream job as Faculty Director for the Office of Equity, Social Justice, & Multicultural Education. Lee says, "they said they wanted a black person to do this job. Apparently, I am the wrong kind of black." In her first week @deanza_college, Lee was accused of "whitesplaining" as she tried to set a meeting agenda, and she was told that she was perpetuating "white supremacy" by valuing punctuality & engaging in strategic planning.

It seemed that her approach would not be allowed.

On May 28th, 10-year-old Daniel Marquez was arrested at his Florida home by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Carmine Marceno.

Daniel was subsequently booked, handcuffed, perp-walked, and incarcerated for 21 days before charges were filed. fairforall.org/fair-stands-up… The basis for the arrest were private text messages sent by Daniel to a friend, intended as a joke, which the Sheriff mischaracterized as a “threat” to fit his political agenda.

Reporters @winknews have been covering the story:

The FAIR legal team has sent a letter to the @UtahDepOfHealth after the state implemented an unconstitutional and unethical policy to use “race” as a factor in determining who is eligible to receive potentially life-saving COVID-19 medical treatment.

🧵 Image On January 21st, Utah announced they had overturned that policy. However, despite that announcement, Utah's online “risk score calculator” still required patients to identify their “race” and disqualified patients from receiving COVID-19 treatments based solely on skin color...

THREAD: Neo-racism in private schools often functions via powerful consultants who profit by forcing race essentialism on our children.

@theglasgowgroup is one such consulting group. Here is an inside look at how they function.

At a recent @isminc conference, Rodney Glasgow of @theglasgowgroup doesn't see upset parents as a crisis—rather it's a sign of "changing the system." Parents upset about neo-racism simply need to be managed better.

How do we define the race-essentialist orthodoxy prevalent in our institutions?

It's time we start calling it what it is.

neo-racism (noun)
neo-rac·ism | nē-ō-ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm 1a.) a belief that race is a real and inescapable social construct that determines an individual’s identity, agency, beliefs, ability, or culture, such that members of different race groups can never understand each other due to intrinsic and insurmountable cultural differences.

Another victory for free speech:

Last week, the 5th Circuit issued an important decision relating to compelled speech in public schools.

“Desire not to say the pledge is not an opinion, it is a
constitutional right.”

(1/4) In that case, Oliver v. Arnold, the teacher instructed students to transcribe the Pledge of Allegiance.
A student who disagreed with the Pledge declined to complete the assignment and instead drew a squiggly line.
