Gender, tech and (counter)power. “genderfucky nightmare goth” according to @motherboard, both kinds of trans PhD student according to @UW. they/them.

I appreciate I do not have the most optimistic opinion of facial recognition, but it is particularly terrifying to watch trans people as deceivers/trans people as acceptable false positives in the quest for perfect security against "criminality" continually perpetuated here. Also the idea that trans people's genders or presentations are somehow synthetic and less-than-human, but I gotta be honest if your HRT is being administered SURGICALLY I have some questions about your doctor.

“Professor at major university secretly records students for Facial Recognition, releases the results to the government” is simultaneously the most and least shocking thing.

One project I want to see: who is funded to do this? Not companies: academics? Who is culpable? He argues that it’s actually for the greater good because if we make FRT perfect it will prevent cops arresting the wrong people.

This is why I have such a visceral distaste for the “let’s make FRT inclusive” narratives. It legitimises the tech and paternalistic “improvements”

Today is the anniversary of the Nazi book burnings, when the entire research library at Hirschfeld’s Institute of Sexology was publicly burned. Almost all scientific research into trans lives went kaput. People who think we appeared yesterday: there’s a reason you think that. I have Extremely Mixed feelings about science wrt trans lives and the ongoing legacy and consequences of the (psycho)(medical) model, but as a general rule when it comes to picking which side might be less murderous for minorities you pick the one who aren’t _literal Nazis_

Big horror news: NIST has been using child pornography, immigration records and the photographs of dead arrestees to train facial recognition. Op-ed by @drnikki , @profwernimont and myself slate.com/technology/201… I'm going to put up a piece later tonight on maybe my blog on the human experience of processing and dealing with this kind of work, because it's a lot. People screaming. People crying. Consumed by a machine, without their consent, to hunt down people who look like them. Just....

Okay fine it is time for: ~THE STORY OF THE EXPLODING POPE~

(CW for gore, medical malpractice, gore, and gore)

(sorry new followers, if I come off as v.v.unprofessional today, it's because I am) This is Pius XII, pope from 1939 to 1958. He's the one who appeaed the Nazis, which is obviously the attribute that most people focus on. But he had two other noteworthy attributes:

1. He was obsessed with his own body
2. He was perhaps UNIQUELY BAD at picking doctors
