Apple added #DX12 support to macOS and Apple Silicon via its Game Porting Toolkit. It’s basically a 20k patch to Wine that will make it easy to play AAA Windows games on macOS without using a VM. github.com/apple/homebrew… This video goes into more details if you don’t want to read the insane patch file augmented on top of the homebrew formula.

First, I need to know what the screen resolution and quality is like. I gotta see it in person, even before I drop down money for a dev device. This only works is the resolution is super crisp. I also need to know battery. Using it tethered is fine, but I need to know battery I’m looking forward to the State of the Union for the dev stuff b/c I want a better understanding of types of apps that will be ideal here. And also of power for playback and video conferencing and Mac stuff.

FTR, unlimited PTO is a scam and we all know it. Because people asked: this is why it is a scam: it is designed to benefit the company, not employee. In the US (the only place you can get away with it), the reason companies do this is so they don’t have to pay out PTO when you leave or are laid off.

I’ve figured out a through-line in my career/life: my very favorite thing to do is to highlight cool people making cool shit, leveraging my/my employer’s platform/reach to do so. Legit, it’s my favorite thing. That and connecting cool people together. This is why I created #TheDownload (latest episode ) and why I love doing streams and talks that highlight cool stuff. Call me a connector or whatever the term is, but I love sharing cool stuff from cool people, tech, art, whatever it might be.

Imagine tweeting this and thinking it shows good managerial judgment. Any company in 2022 that doesn’t understand the insipid necessity of the counteroffer song and dance is stuck back in the 1980s or something, back when people had pensions and you worked at companies for life. That’s not how things work.

Huzzah and good news for all of us old school pirates, or file sharers I guess we could say. A new Transmission beta after years and years of waiting. Also, Apple Silicon support. github.com/transmission/t… I torrent and I will not apologize for it, nor will I pretend that I only torrent Linux distros or artist-approved bootlegs. I spend more on media than any person I’ve ever met, let me torrent in peace.

Warner Bros. Television has always been the best at TV, if we’re honest. That’s why gutting HBO Max and making it more like Discovery would be a mistake Because inspire of Stankey and co trying to kill and dilute HBO, terrible name aside, HBO Max has been good! Really good! No other network or television studio has had the sort of run of WBTV or HBO. HBO is a given but people always sleep on WBTV’s lineage

No matter what they are saying, shit must have been BAD for them to not even release this to the Max on the DL. To not even finish editing? Damn. variety.com/2022/film/news… There is no way you don't even finish the edit and do the most casual/small of small releases here if you think this has any value at all. To bury it, it has to be both bad and not worth even running on European satellite TV.

I’d really like to see true mea culpas from all the so-called fact checkers and the oped columnists who pushed the idea that the 10-year old rape story was false. We won’t, but if they really cared about truth in media, they’d do more than just issue a correction at the top. It was really horrifying to read the comments on those articles that all but said “this is a hoax,” especially at places like @BulwarkOnline where the author doubled-down and argued with knowledgeable commenters and seeing almost zero reflection/admittance of being wrong.

I was using Uber 10 years ago but wow, yeah. This hits. Outside of NYC, where a Manhattan street hail is often acceptable (but good luck if you live in an outer Borough), I can’t remember the last time I chose a taxi over an app, at least in the US. There are many terrible things about Uber and Lyft and the rest, but as I’ve argued for over a decade, the pre-app car service/taxi market was deplorable in basically every US city outside NYC (where it is passable but just b/c there are so many of them) and just as exploitative

This from @jdevalk is really great. I have some preliminary thoughts 🧵joost.blog/wordpress-mark… First, WordPress is and will continue to be the dominant CMS on the web. Even if market share is shrinking, there isn’t going to be a single player CMS that will usurp WordPress. (WooCommerce is a different story). For better or worse, WordPress is the Windows of CMSs

I got my @opalcamera today. For people who don’t have an extra iPhone to use with Camo and a LEGO Apple Display Stand, I think this is the one, high-end Mac users. This is the one. Is $300 a lot for a webcam. Yes. Is it better (for me) than having to finagle an always-on iPhone? Yes. Is it close to as good as my A6400 webcam? Also yes. The A6400 is better but it isn’t portable. Or white.

I dunno. What about just not raising the plans on your highest tier by 20% every two years. nytimes.com/2022/05/10/bus… I got my mom Hulu with ads for Christmas this year as a Black Friday special b/c it was very cheap and you guys, I can’t go back to life with ads. And I actually love good advertising. But I just can’t do it on streaming services.

I was traveling/jet-lagged today, but this woman lost her book for plagiarism and then plagiarized @plagiarismtoday in her mea culpa. DO NOT DO THIS! Look, there are basically two things you cannot do as an author: make shit up when you claim it is supposed to be non-fiction/journalism and plagiarize. That’s basically it. Don’t do those things!

I'm a huge Netflix fan, but searching for new subs could lead Netflix to making dumb, dumb, dumb. Decisions. B/c this is how the content landscape works today 🧵

Netflix: Most expensive, least must-watch content, smallest back catalog, best interface, ubiquitous HBO Max: Good pricing, best must-watch/new content, very good back catalog, terrible app, poised to get better with the Discovery+ merger

Bingo. I've been a Netflix user since I want to say, 1999, when I wasn't even old enough to have my own credit/debit card. But if they want to pull this shit, well... Also, look, I realize travel is only now starting to come back, but in the not so distant past, I was often out of the country at least a week a month. If they do this whole "one location" bullshit, what does that mean for me? I have to pay for two subs for me and Grant?

Putting all of the real people who are now out of jobs aside for a moment, can we reflect on why a company the size of Basecamp has this many people talking for this many days? Like, I’m guilty of this too, to be clear. But I keep asking myself, “why?” Like, objectively, the decisions that small company makes (and yes, 57 people is quite small, comparatively) is being equated as being a trend or a sign of industry movement. Why do we give it that much power? Why do we buy into the idea that it has influence that it doesn’t?

Look, we all knew the brouhaha yesterday was b/c of something. I had no idea it was quite this cringeworthy. And to be clear, I’m not talking about the ill-advised list. I’m taking about one of the founders searching through Campfire for receipts to call-out someone speaking up Like, read @CaseyNewton’s story. Putting all of the other nonsense aside, the bottom line is that the company publicly and loudly did a 180 on policy b/c David was an asshole to one of his employees and there was an HR complaint that obv. wasn’t acted on.

This is so hard. Silence of the Lambs, Terms of Endearment, No Country

Not being able to pick American Beauty, Ordinary People, The Departed or Spotlight really hurts.

Also Traffic and Lost in Translation should be choices in that list and it is bullshit they aren’t. Parasite would be in my top 3 but it feels too soon to say it could be there after one year. If I got to pick one per decade Parasite is my pick.

This is a good interview from @DanielHowley but Dan Ives makes a crucial mistake that so many other analysts have made over the years: Netflix wasn’t for sale and also, Apple doesn’t need to buy anything. finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-mis… Like, I don’t know how much more plainly I can say that Netflix wasn’t for sale 12 years ago any more than it is today. And if Apple had acquired Netflix, it would have become Lala, not Netflix. All of us (Apple included) are better off for it not being acquired.
