Autobio Thread:

I was recently asked about my background in relationship to cryptocurrency and cryptoart. I didn't go into the details at that time but here's some of that for those who are curious.

@cryptofitch In terms of my understanding of cryptocurrency I think it began with virtual currency and Edward Castronova's research on Second Life in the early aughts.

The Coming Cryptoart Bubble: A Thread for Artists

So DeFi farming hit a rough spot. People started talking about NFTs cause you can flip them. @APompliano pointed out that "digital art" is the "next big bet" and the NFT/cryptoart pundits established their positions. Now what are you going to do, cryptoartist?

This is going to be a bubble in which fast moving artists can benefit before the collapse. Cause every bubble pops, right? Which means a downtime will follow. Take advantage now.

I briefly brushed up against the joke meme but it was over before I heard much about it. People are taking this very seriously and it will be interesting to see if it impacts the individual instigators brands. Here are a bunch of mostly negative reactions to :

Building @cryptoartnet part-time is so frustrating. I feel like everyone's passing me in the fast lane.

It didn't help to have a big crypto company string me along for literally months and kill my first project launch. Still moving forward but lost a lot of momentum. Nevertheless, staying in my lane and building as I can has already been hugely rewarding.

I'm glad to be part of the cryptoart/NFT scene and look forward to much more to come.

CryptoArt is what it is because of the artists, the platforms and the collectors.

Having one individual throwing their money/weight around as @WhaleShark_Pro is doing & then dropping in on political discussions to say he's creating a Zen Garden w/ @whale_community is not right. I really wanted to stay out of the @WhaleShark_Pro controversy. I feel everyone has their role to play in the CryptoArt community but there's a limit to any one person's power.

If you want to change things, launch your own platform.

But don't pillage & burn & then launch.

Wow, trying to add a post to the only WordPress blog I have that's using blocks.

The new edition of WP manages to be even more annoying and that's saying a lot.

It's turned a very simple post into a whole new process. Basic things that make WP worthwhile aren't even working. I can see what they're trying to do but they do it in such a way that it adds steps to really simple tasks which I am almost always opposed to doing.

Bad UI = Bad UX

I see some nice additions but the user pays a price for each addition.

NFTs may facilitate such possibilities which have mostly failed in music industry pre-blockchain. For example, there have been numerous attempts to start music royalty stock markets of various types.

I wrote about many of these for Hypebot.com in the early 2010s before the tech blogs figured out that music tech startups weren't just streaming music.

Not automatically true and possibly a mistake unless it enables much higher pricing. For example, when someone buys a work of visual art, they do not get the copyrights to that art. Buying an NFT does not confer such rights unless specified in the contract in whatever form that contract takes:

I'm very disturbed by @CurrencyDesign's series Dangerous Voices on @Blockchainartex featuring extreme right wing U.S. figures who are in fact dangerous to our democracy and to the freedom of many abroad: Image To cast the founder of the Proud Boys, Gavin McInnes, and disinformationists like Alex Jones as voices "silenced" by "liberal social media platforms" is to ally oneself with forces of evil: Image
