Today my thoughts are of Captain Alix Idrache, a US Army helicopter pilot, who graduated at the top of his West Point class with a degree in physics in 2016.

He's also a Haitian immigrant. Image Among the many notable things about him is what he wrote when the above photo of his West Point graduation went viral... Image

Yes, the Tracy Chapman / Luke Combs performance mattered because it was a connection across supposed divides, but it also mattered because Combs embodied unbridled joy, admiration, and respect for Chapman, something we see FAR too rarely when these sorts of bridges are celebrated. Image He knew he was a guest at HER table and rightfully was out of his mind with joy to be there. Image

The thing about the get along with everyone advice is that it’s easily given and followed from a position of power, because “getting along” rarely means giving up anything that you’re already denying to the folks you’re getting along with. Folks aren’t looking for a fight.

They’re looking for things to which they have a right: fair pay, bodily autonomy, to live free from fear of mortal harm.

You don’t have a right to expect them to get along with you while you deny or seek to deny them those things.

He’s Tom Wambsgans without the inherent midwestern likability. It’s the fact that he’s OF these people but CLEARLY thinks he’s better than them (spoiler, he’s not) but lacks the acting talent or natural charisma to mask it.

They should build a statue of these two men outside of the London Stadium. Or at least gift them a painting of the events. Just use this as the reference image. Image

A young man on the subway yells that he has no food, nothing to drink, and doesn’t care if he goes to jail. Never threatens anyone directly. Commits no violence.

And someone sneaks up from behind and chokes the life out of him for FIFTEEN minutes. nypost.com/2023/05/02/sho… No attempt to talk. No offer of help. No attempt to stand between him and the people he was supposedly threatening. No attempt to leave the train and leave him to his misery.

A child murderer, who never acknowledged or faced justice for her crime, died this week, having lived almost 75 years more than her victim, not a single day spent behind bars. They say rewriting is important.

It is untrue that no one had ever put a woman in an action movie before Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games.

It is absolutely true that Hollywood had and has a real bias against women driven action movies because of this ridiculous belief about who identifies with whom. Part of the problem is that previous successes were often dismissed as being successful for reasons other than their being female driven action: Alien is a monster movie. Kill Bill is Tarantino. Titanic was epic romance. Twilight is YA.

They're all female driven action.

Y’all see a healthy moviegoing ecosystem, I see a near total lack of anyone but white guys making movies. (Shoutout to Nora Ephron though.) Not me tweeting and deleting additional thoughts about this tweet as a matter of self preservation.

What if, and just go with me here, @AndrewYang, there were more effective ways to change the system than launching a third party named after your book with you as the figurehead? Like, maybe the biggest problem with the system isn’t two parties, it’s the fact that all American voters don’t have an equal representation in their federal gov’t and that’s if they can register at all while one party actively tries to reduce the number of eligible voters who do

There are movie trailers and there are movie trailers. This is the latter. The trailer genre here is clearly “what the hell did I just watch? I must know immediately.” One of my favorites.

The reality is that at the highest levels. the Hollywood film business remains the least diverse sector in American business.

It’s been cosmetically “woke,” at best, to the extent that it’s been “woke” at all.

This is actual nonsense. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/… I invite @asymmetricinfo to do absolutely any research whatsoever on the economics of diversity in Hollywood.

She may consider starting with this 2021 study from @mckinsey, who may know a little something about capital and its deployment.

There is now more that $300k actively available to screenwriters via opportunities on @theblcklst, above and beyond the industry professionals using the site to find writers and their work.

And applying to every single one of them is FREE once you’re hosting a script on the site And yeah, there’s still more coming.

This is an absolute embarrassment. nytimes.com/2022/03/18/opi… First of all, this was never a right enumerated in the Constitution or in any civil society:

“The right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned.”

This quote is actually from Kevin Alfred Strom, a white supremacist and Holocaust denier who pled guilty to possession of child pornography. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence though, right @RepThomasMassie?

An article published today claims that I "declined to comment" when asked about Hollywood and diversity.

What I actually said explicitly was that I wasn't up for an interview with that publication, because I didn't believe it could engage the subject in good faith. I added that a public conversation on the record would be a maybe, but an interview that they could edit as they saw fit was an absolute no.

Seeing as they still chose to invoke my name and describe that as "declined to comment," instinct confirmed!

Stuff like this is, in part, why we built the Black List website. If writers are paying to submit work they've labored over for hundreds of hours, readers should have some modicum of experience professionally evaluating scripts for the industry, and they should be paid a living wage...

The other thing I’m fascinated about re: Squid Game:

In a world where such an unexpected global phenomenon is possible with this speed (it really wasn’t before), how does Netflix approach capturing the upside in consumer products related to their new hit? Something tells me this tweet isn’t unrelated.
