This has been bugging me incessantly, so I want to go through an understandable example of why we DO NOT want a tax on "unrealized" capital gains. This will be a long thread. Prepare yourself. It's already bad enough that we tax income and capital gains, but that's beside the point. The 16th Amendment exists. Most countries tax income. Oh, well here we are.

@elonmusk did not have a "3.27% true tax rate" between 2014 and 2018. He had income of $1.52 billion and paid about 29.93% taxes on it. That was his "true tax rate," and we should all be glad it's not higher. Just because Musk's stock holdings grew $13.9 billion doesn't mean anything. That could be wiped out by a stock panic or something going critically wrong with his cars. It's "real" insofar as everyone believes it's real, but it's not like he has $14 billion in cash to pay taxes.

Scientists believe the Mayan civilization collapsed as a result of drought ca. 800-1000CE. The article I read then compared this to effects from climate change brought on by warming.

800-1000CE was the tail end of the (colder) Dark Ages that *preceded* the Medieval Warm Period. People want to assign every change to our environment to Anthropogenic Global Warming (aka “Climate Change”). The reality is that we have a very poor understanding of our planet’s climate history and what the overall effects of the current warming period will be.

Some Leftists are almost *giddy* that the US may pass Italy and China (while the latter is clearly falsifying its data). Yet once we normalize for population, US spread of the disease is 1/5 of Italy. Over half of all US COVID-19 cases are in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area, just one highly dense epicenter. The city’s Mayor told people to go out, shop, and have a good time even as it was becoming clear there were many Americans already infected in the region.
