I’ve sat through hundreds of portfolio presentations. I usually walk away with the same takeaway after a presentation from someone who comes from a Big Tech company: what did they do?!

I think there are two reasons for this: 1. The candidate did a lot of valuable design work but they’re not able to convey it in a compelling story. Storytelling is a key skill for designers and a portfolio presentation is where you should shine!

I’ve learned that so much of working remotely is about good, written communication. Here are a few tips I’ve found have worked for me. 🧵👇 🔢 When talking about multiple paths to take as a team, use numbered lists and refer to the each path by their number in subsequent messages. Can I critique mankind's colonization of other planets? I wish more time would be spent on how this would improve our quality of life. A lot of this feels exciting to me because we could but not necessarily because we "should".

A piece of advice: you are a lot more than what you do, so don't let that get in the way of who you want to be. Placing one's value on what we do is a quintessentially American idea (e.g., "I AM a Designer")
