I’ve sat through hundreds of portfolio presentations. I usually walk away with the same takeaway after a presentation from someone who comes from a Big Tech company: what did they do?!

I think there are two reasons for this: 1. The candidate did a lot of valuable design work but they’re not able to convey it in a compelling story. Storytelling is a key skill for designers and a portfolio presentation is where you should shine!

I’ve learned that so much of working remotely is about good, written communication. Here are a few tips I’ve found have worked for me. 🧵👇 🔢 When talking about multiple paths to take as a team, use numbered lists and refer to the each path by their number in subsequent messages. This avoids repetition and ensures everyone is talking about the same thing, not slightly reworded versions of an idea.

To folks starting out in design, here’s 8️⃣ little tricks to navigate your career as you start the new year. 1️⃣ Find your North Star — explore everything you’re interested in, then double down on the few things that you’re good at and enjoy doing (that combination is key).

Is it possible that we may have a limited number of "connection points" (read: Dunbar's number) and we're now more connected to the people we *want* to rather than the people we *have* to? If that were the case, it seems right to let us spend those points however we want (power to the people ✊) but what is our criteria for choosing communities to connect with?

After just 2 days, I'm leaving #GDC18 pretty energized! So, I started thinking about what a non-dystopic AR future could look like (are there any?)

A lot of this feels exciting to me because we could but not necessarily because we "should".

A piece of advice: you are a lot more than what you do, so don't let that get in the way of who you want to be. Placing one's value on what we do is a quintessentially American idea (e.g., "I AM a Designer")
