Thread concerning some of the conduct of @GalwayCityCo in relation to active travel during the pandemic. Much will already have been made of the prominent failure of the city council executive to do much positive of note for adults on bicycles let alone children. @Martina13499055 @CloHiggins @EddieHoareFG @paulinegalway @AlanCheeversFF @niallgalway @niall_mcnelis @PeterKeaneGAL @EamonRyan @catherinegalway @davidhealyv @ciarancannon @Cathmartingreen @ccferrie @cyclistie

@ProfMattFox In order to ensure a complete debate some perspective is needed.

Medical doctors generate spectacular claims of helmet benefit using methods that are inherently biased and not scientifically valid in my view. @ProfMattFox I view the majority of claims of helmet benefit coming from medical doctors as being derived using methods that are;

1. Scientifically invalid,
2. Inherently biased against the poor,
3. Implicitly racist.

Doctors who push cycling helmets are a threat to public health.

@SVUHTrauma @drconordeasy @ryanjtw @jamesfoley273 @marina_cronin @noca_irl @TARNaudit There has now been time for initial appraisal of this paper. It may be that some claims may be presented to the public as indicating a protective effect for cycling helmets when in fact the methods used by the authors are unlikely to provide meaningful information. @SVUHTrauma @drconordeasy @ryanjtw @jamesfoley273 @marina_cronin @noca_irl @TARNaudit @louisebrent28 @kgildeaTCD @CiaranSimms

Is anybody else concerned by the @greenparty_ie's call for 20% of the transport budget for walking and cycling?

A budget "heading" is not an actual commitment to increase walking or cycling or a commitment to improve the safety or convenience of either form of travel. There are various examples of places that have spent heavily on cycling infrastructure have still been highly car-dependent. Milton Keynes, Stevenage etc.

Irish local authorities have a proven ability to spend "budgets" for walking and cycling in a profoundly cynical manner.
