One thing is clear from the massive number of signatories to rms-open-letter.github.io (now including the Xorg board, Mozilla as an organization, and _seven_ former Debian project leaders): the FSF certainly no longer has a leadership voice in the free software community.
They'd lost that role a while ago, and the FSF knew it - so they chose to keep every single organizer, speaker, and sponsor of _their own conference_ in the dark, because they knew the free software community would refuse to participate if told the truth.
Okay, this Trustico SSL certificate disaster looks _amazing._ As far as I can tell, the most likely story is:
Trustico, a web host, wanted to move their customers away from Symantec certs to Comodo, and wanted to force their customers to move by revoking their certs.
