Democrats win on the compactness argument for two reasons:
- They turned off the compactness requirement that exists in state law
- Compactness is such a vague, debatable concept SCOVA already set a precedent of staying out of those debates
Richmond Circuit Court Judge Tracy Thorne-Begland on the new maps:
"The 2026 maps are undoubtedly less compact than the ones they replace. They are certainly partisan gerrymanders. They displace both representatives and voters into new, oddly shaped districts."

Va. House votes 52-48 to send bill ending school mask mandates to @GovernorVA.
House GOP also defeated Dem efforts to make the bill expire in a year and strip out the part dealing with masks
Dems pointedly asked what's the big rush if the bill, as written, won't take effect until July 1.
The rush is because Youngkin is expected to send down an emergency clause making it effective immediately.
