Another curious angle of the George Santos saga flagged by an eagle-eyed tipster: Santos didn't play volleyball at Baruch College. But who did? SCOTUS invited the Biden admin to weigh in on a case about a North Carolina charter school's rule requiring girls to wear skirts. The case is not just about a dress code, but whether charter schools are fundamentally "state actors"
My explainer @19thnews… @19thnews The skirt-only rule aimed to promote "chivalry" and the idea that girls are "a fragile vessel," the school's founder wrote in an email to a parent
She and 2 other parents sued & won at the district court and appellate level, now the case could go to SCOTUS…

NEW: The conservative movement’s next big play for their power in the states is to “scare the hell out of Washington' with an unprecedented convention to rewrite the Constitution. And they're willing to play the long game to win. From @BrentGriffiths & me:… @BrentGriffiths We’ve talked *a lot* about the Constitution lately. This story is about a less-discussed element: Article V, and the little-known but very active — & well-funded — conservative push to rewrite the Constitution with a first-of-its-kind convention of states…

A 3-part deep-dive on state supreme courts, an highly consequential legal arena & red-hot political battleground. The growing power of state courts has spurred tens of millions of dollars in campaign spending — and heated political attacks:… Part 1: Who are our state Supreme Court justices? My latest:
How a rogue governor & one chamber of Congress could steal the 2024 presidential election far more efficiently than the methods Trump & co tried in 2020 — and how changes to the Electoral Count Act intended to constrain Congress could enable it… I wondered how a governor could steal an election last month when David Perdue said he wouldn’t have certified GA's 2020 election
@Matt_Seligman walked me thru how it's not just possible but, he argues, more likely in 2024 than a repeat of 2020/21 tactics…

ICYMI: I wrote earlier about the real-world impact of Texas' new voting law, w/ shortages of new paper voter reg and mail ballot request forms, high rejection rates for mail ballot applications, and county clerks hamstrung from helping people vote by mail… To sum up...TX has both a new voter reg form & new absentee ballot request form bc of changes to the law. Because TX has no online registration for most, the voting system relies a lot on paper — and supply chain problems are creating a paper shortage + shortage of the new forms

NEW deep-dive from me: Congress may take up reforms to the Electoral Count Act, looking ahead towards 2025
But in the much nearer future, the 2022 midterms could see open warfare over election results ending up in an increasingly polarized Congress… "There's been so much discussion about the 2024 election, we're forgetting that there are plenty of other important elections you can subvert," @RepColinAllredTX said, adding its "a real possibility" Congress may get results "we're gonna have to question…

New from me: After a year of GOP leaders pushing election restrictions & partisan audits to "restore voter confidence," 2 new polls released this week show that GOP voters' confidence & their faith that the 2022 election will be fair is at an all-time low… .@MonmouthPoll found that not only do over 73% of Republicans believe Biden's 2020 win was due to voter fraud, but that 62% believe that Cyber Ninjas recount in AZ definitely or probably found "significant voter fraud" (it did not, and it couldn't have)…

A lot's been said on what Democrats should learn from Tuesday, but here's one for Republicans:

GOP candidates likely benefited from Democrats expanding ballot access in places like VA, more proof that fighting such changes may not be a winning strategy… We saw this play out last year when, with record levels of mail-in and early voting, Republicans not named Donald Trump did very well in congressional and state legislative races (confirming lots of previous research that expanding early/mail voting doesn’t benefit either party)
