Hello!🚆

I’ll be live-tweeting the MDOT Detroit New Center Intermodal Facility (DNCIF) project at 5:30pm for #DETdocumenters.
@media_outlier
@BridgeDet313
@PlanetDetroit

@freep
@wdet
@Detour_Detroit
@metrotimes

@chalkbeatDET
@DetDocumenters The new intermodal facility in Detroit would replace the current Amtrak station aka the Amshack, and combine it with buses like Greyhound, as well as connecting to local transit and being better set up for cabs and rideshare.

I am on the monthly DDOT community input meeting call.

I don't have the bandwidth to do a full Grenadine Livetweet™ today, but here's a few highlights:

DDOT themselves admitted they've been having especially tough reliability problems, and riders agree Sounds like DDOT reliability is extra bad after 6pm.

It's an issue of not having enough drivers.

Dedicated advocate Cunningham says "By any means necessary, we need to get these drivers."

I highly recommend this stunning longread by @superanne, who tracked down the woman her house was illegally taken from.

I fully believe Tomeka was not told about the coming foreclosure, as someone who's been the one to let residents know myself.

bridgedetroit.com/i-was-given-a-… Tomeka's house was taken after two years, not the required three, and Wayne County appears to have lost a bunch of her payments.

The house she paid $700 for got a five-digit assessment. It was not worth that.

I just heard the most unhinged north city story I’ve heard in my life.

Actually mostly a “how cops act in north city” story.

I am physically sweating from my friend calling me and telling me this. I have to think about how much I say on here / possibly check with my friend but the short version is my friends heard consistent info about a body being buried on a Paul McKee lot right by their houses, but despite having this murder 90% solved SLMPD would not come dig

Seems like an appropriate priority when DDOT is about to cut three entire bus routes and didn’t even put up signs at all the bus stops they’re cutting

Folks are experiencing FOUR HOUR WAITS for buses and the state is funding [checks notes] a fancy car charger Let me be clear I’m speaking just for me, personally, here.

The majority of politicians in Michigan do not understand or care abt public transit. They do not give one single shit about a Detroit city bus, or understand how badly our godawful transit hurts Detroiters and Detroit

Soooo many people were saying this back then. It was so obvious.

They used volunteers to plant their trees, didn’t even pay for that. I remember seeing one of the top people from Hantz Farms speaking at a planning conference.

They thought it was a friendly audience so they were just letting the contempt for Detroit and Detroiters fly. They thought we weren’t in the room.

“There is this relentlessness to the push for removal, to the pressure on Native people.”

—John Bowes talking about the history of Michigan and Indiana at the Cranbrook Bauder lecture

Treaty agents kept coming back & demanding more land years after year Eric Hemenway, Director of Repatriation, Archives and Records for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, says it's important to understand Indian removal in the context of how long they had been here before it happened, thousands of years. Michigan is his home.

I winced when I heard us mentioned on the national news earlier.

Please stop going places, Michigan. "Cases among kids ages 10 to 19 have risen 133% in the last four weeks, faster than any other age group as outbreaks continue to rise in schools and youth sports."

Here is a mini thread of some Detroit / Hamtramck / Highland Park area vaccine options!

These are not all of the ones that exist, just the ones I've been sending people to successfully. PLEASE NOTE this info changes rapidly! If you're seeing this a long time after March 29 it may not be fresh.

Here goes.

"The problem is that the City government and administration has totally" excluded them from the process, says a commenter. Same commenter says that Councilman Roy McCallister supported one thing then turned around and stood with the Mayor, without telling the neighborhood about the change.

Slipped into this Detroit City Planning Commission hearing, it sounds like they might be getting rid of a sculpture park along Alexandrine? Would that be the Robert Sestok park that has only been there a few years, I wonder? It would be parking for the redevelopment of that school at Selden and the Lodge. Glad to hear it's being preserved. I share Lauren Hood's view that they need to seriously step up including Black people from Detroit (and paying them) on their team.

At the State Fairgrounds public hearing again. I can tweet notes later.

The short version is: This is a wildly wasteful site plan. It's developed

1) as if it's in a greenfield, not on a historic site in a city, and
2) with tons of unplanned/spec space!!!!! HOW ARE YOU GONNA TEAR DOWN NATIONAL REGISTER BUILDINGS WHEN HALF YOUR SITE PLAN IS NOT EVEN PLANNED YET?

It looks like they want to put the bus station where the NR buildings are now. You have so much space that isn't actually designated for anything, put it there!!!!!!

So there’s this thing on my block that looks like a driveway, but is too skinny to be a driveway.

It could maybe be used for a riding mower or a motorcycle, but I have never ever seen it being used.

Everyone on the block seems to avoid parking there, so I do the same. I have wondered about it, because some nights it gets fairly parked up over here. If no one ever uses that driveway-like thing, why not park there?

I could not even say. My grandparents survived the Holocaust (not everyone in my family did) and so the knowledge was just always kind of there, a reality of our story and of how you interacted with Grandma and Grandpa. Even when we were too young to understand, we know you shouldn't say you "hate" something trivial (like broccoli) around them because they would become emotional and tell you you didn't understand what hate is.

In 2001 I was in high school in Skokie, a very diverse Chicago suburb.

Discrimination against the Muslim kids started right away.

I think it was even the same day, Sept 11, that an Assyrian American classmate started getting told to go back where he came from. My classmate also had people taunting him about "his uncles" doing the attack.

Lest you think it was only kids, we could palpably feel that our Muslim neighbors around the neighborhood were terrified.

At a public meeting about the new development at the Fairgrounds. I kind of want to tweet but this might make me too mad. Been lobbying on this for years, tired of the proposal just getting worse. Here's the link if anyone wants to jump on tonight's public meeting about the State Fairgrounds. There will be two more if you can't make this one. This one focuses on transit. cityofdetroit.zoom.us/j/91431590012?…

Sewage backed up in the basement again! Not high enough to ruin anything but 1) ugh 2) I wonder if anyone ablebodied is gonna bother cleaning it. I cannot w/o being hurt It feels sometimes like I’m the only one who can be bothered to do anything around here, from putting the trash out (reminder: I’m disabled) to replacing basement lightbulbs to simply picking up flyers left on the porch. If I don’t do it it doesn’t happen

Oh damn, facebook has a moderation tool that allows you to be alerted when keywords you determine are mentioned in your group.

I don't think we need it yet but it's good to know I can set a Discourse Alarm if needed And as much as I am irked by people bringing "density fixes everything. I don't know fair housing history. Everywhere is California" crap into our group that explicitly is not a place for that, I've had to ban way more people being being racist than for -IMBY suffixed violations
