Michael Carrick's first session at Manchester United as Head Coach:
⚠️This thread isn't the rod to beat or the jewel to crown Carrick with, I'll leave agenda to certain other pages.

Manchester United release training footage that's not activation or rondo's for the first time in 14 months, which we will celebrate by unravelling it

In the 🧶 you will find

🗒️ SESSION DESIGN: what are they doing
🔍 DETAILS: how and why are they doing it

The purpose is to give background to the "unknown tangibles" - the details beyond the surface level which I hope to deliver using my experience and knowledge.

📆 WEEKLY CYCLE

Manchester United have one game per week this season, allowing them to have the traditional full week training cycle. The players were off for Monday & Tuesday, came back in on Wednesday which is supposedly when this footage was taken.

The next game is on Saturday, making this a MATCHDAY-3 training - the furthest removed from both games.
This is therefore the physically heaviest loaded session; often a STRENGTH day - the aim is to create tension in the muscles more than the other days, allowing maximal recovery between games.

💪FOOTBALL STRENGTH

is to maintain a posture with resistance, playing duels (tackling, closing down), shooting. 15-20' of resistance training in the gym can also be included.Image 💪PRE-TRAINING

This is the area of the physical performance staff, who create individual programmes for each player based on their profile and needs (e.g. Return To Performance Protocol).

Players spend until half an hour doing specific non-football drills.

Luke Shaw is keeping the stick above his head, with arms stretched, stick perpendicular to the direction you're watching. The idea is to isolate body segments (upper body is separated) which can reveal imbalance in the hips. Often done in running motion (keep the stick as straight as possible), done here over hurdles to rotate the hips.

Bruno Fernandes is using external resistance (cable) while Lisandro Martinez uses weights to increase the body weight: on a STRENGTH day they are performing explosivity drills to load the quadriceps.

Same for Harry Maguire and Matheus Cunha using the boxes.Image

🇵🇹 A few surface level topics on Manchester United's appointment of Ruben AMORIM and his staff (Ferro, Fernandes, Adelio and Barreira) Image 🇵🇹 is renowned for the TACTICAL PERIODISATION which is the methodology that incorporated all scales of football training in one; and revolutionized the game through José Mourinho.

Mourinho was the first to find a practical methodology to implement Frade's theories. Image

🧵Looking at Manuel UGARTE, winning the ball, the SKILL, TECHNIQUES and MECHANICS behind it. SKILL refers to tasks players can complete; scoring/WINNING/keeping the ⚽️

TECHNIQUE refers to which solutions the player has for a task; a sliding tackle, a scissor tackle ✂️

MECHANISMS are individual differences in how technique is executed 👤

1v1s (this one is FRONTAL) are about TAKING CHARGE.

For Amad, that means dribbling at speed, and make the defender DOUBT.

For Kambwala, it means to take the speed out of Amad; "be ready, ..., CONTACT". Making contact takes the speed out of attackers.

Excellent from Amad here

Antony comes at Gore with much less speed, taking touches with the inside of his boot. Actually manages to create SEPARATION from Gore, but cuts back again which is the wrong decision.

As soon as you manage to create separation, you should exploit it (release the ball).

Some ideas and thoughts on this short sequence of Manchester United building their attack

🧵
Image 🧱 BUILD-UP, the first plays in the ATTACK

It's much less about individual *creativity* to "turn on the ball" and evade pressure, it's more about the GROUP tactics of

WHEN we create space (WHERE) and HOW we get there Image

The ROLE of a WINGER can differ from team to team, but generally;

🍽️ CREATE chances
⚽️ SCORE goals
👥 win your direct DUELS in offense
🧱DEFEND and SUPPORT your wide defender

Again, as for any position, SKILLSETS fill these in differently. Image A way of looking at SKILLSET is that athletes have "TOOLS" that inform their skills - on any level.

For example, a winger might be expected to excel in

⚡️SPEED
🏋️‍♂️POWER (ability to perform STRENGTH at SPEED)
🧠CREATIVITY (do the unexpected)

Tactics may not be what you think they are - here's why.

A deep dive into the existence of tactics in football, where they happen, and what they actually are. 🧵 Image Tactics are executed on THREE layers.

🔴INDIVIDUAL (1 player)
🟡GROUP (3 to 4 players)
🔵COLLECTIVE/TEAM (11 players)

The most influential tactics are played out at the individual and group levels - not the collective. Image

Motor Learning and Didactics might give some interesting insights into the development of empowered, autonomous problem-solvers in football.

Here's a thread applying Principles of MOTOR LEARNING and DIDACTICS to FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT 🧵 First, let's go over some definitions.

💪MOTOR SKILL: the conscious execution of a goal-oriented, consistent and efficient action involving one or more body parts in a coordinated manner.

🧑‍🎓Motor LEARNING: the changes in these processes during training/practising.

There is a huge elephant in the room at Manchester United right now, and it is their physical prowess.

A thread 🧵 Image Let's go over the components of fitness first, before we delve into the issues at hand.

Along with the basics, there is also

🌬️Aerobic endurance (play 90' to a good level)
🏋️Muscular endurance (deal with repetitive contact)

Footballers train these elements to play better. ImageImageImage

Here's something on Enciso's wonder strike vs Man. City as an example for some of the shooting mechanics I talked about on @nonewthing's next Patreon post:

🧵 Image Preparation Phase:

Important to take small steps to be accurate in execution, and work out your footwork

Last step must be large, ready to transfer body momentum to the ball Image

In anticipation of an exciting article, I'll show one shot of Antony in four frames per tweet.

Here we go 🧵 Image Kindly share your xG models but be aware of recurring technical faults:

-Supporting leg not planted enough
-Supporting leg bending knee too much (less energy transfer to ball)
-Shooting leg rotating hip over supporting leg: reducing ball speed ImageImageImageImage
