Despite Hollywood’s avowed dedication to representation and diversity, only one major motion picture was ever shot in Haiti. Production of Wes Craven’s 1988 The Serpent and the Rainbow was a debacle and perhaps the only movie that was both ironically and unironically cursed. 🧵 Image The film was based on a nonfiction work of the same name, written by Harvard ethnobotanist Wade Davis. Davis hypothesized that there was a pharmacological explanation to the origin of zombies. An unnamed drug company funded several trips to Haiti so Davis could investigate. Image

The 1956 historical epic The Conqueror may be the most accursed piece of art ever committed to celluloid. Dreadful in every sense of the word, the Howard Hughes production was critically panned, and may have led to the painful deaths of dozens of its cast and crew. 🧵Image Hughes bought a controlling share in RKO pictures in 1948. The studio, which had once produced classics like King Kong and Citizen Kane, would have its worst years since the Great Depression under Hughes’ tenure and lead to the former filmmaker abandoning the industry entirely. @TheTNStar investigation into the Covenant shooting is a troubling revelation on many fronts, but the most disquieting part of it has little to do with Audrey Hale and much to do with the FBI's policy of withholding information from the public. 🧵 Image Hale’s diaries reveal her to be an insane sexual deviant, not necessarily remarkable for a member of a cohort that includes Aileen Wuornos and Jeffery Dahmer, but rare because the current regime actively promotes Hale’s lifestyle choices. 🧵Battlefield drones play on millennia old psychological tension involving ranged weapons in combat. In book IX of the Iliad, Diomedes taunts Paris after being shot in the foot with an arrow. The exchange illustrates man's struggle with technology and warfare.🧵 Image It's not hard to find online commentary deriding the use of drones in modern warfare. The thought that a soldier on the battlefield can be blown to bits by someone sitting behind a screen wiping Cheeto dust from their fingers is distinctly agitating to morale. Image

It may seem hypocritical for a transperson to aid and abet a government in the process of subjugating someone for expressing unpopular opinions, but subterfuge and duplicity are a recurring theme throughout Carillo’s many careers. Image

🧵Esalen-where destinies are made

The Esalen Institute is a non-profit organization in Monterey County, CA. Billed as a holistic retreat and Educational institute, it played a pivotal role in the Human Potential Movement of the 60's, the later New Age Movement, and the Cold War Image Founded by former servicemen Michael Murphy and Dick Price in 1962, Esalen's mission was to explore "human potentialities." After hearing Aldous Huxley declare during a lecture that humans only utilize 10% of their brains, the institute was created to pursue the remaining 90%. Image
