it's cool to see bluesky fall over its own dick the same way conservative twitter alternatives have, in that its founders seem to believe that platform moderation is a moral and constitutional evil tolerated only under the most extreme circumstances (trans girl called me a bitch)

for folks looking to jump ship from twitter to mastodon i want to share some thoughts on the site as a non-tech person who just happens to use masto daily, because a lot of folks seem to not really know what it is or how it works. 🧵
first of all, mastodon isn't "a website" the way twitter is. it's software used to build websites of similar function that automatically communicate with each other on a shared network. there is a guy who makes the software but he's not "in charge" since masto is open source. 🧵

algorithmic content curation on social media should be highly regulated and open-source, if not outright illegal. the algorithm is just a boss we can't argue with, a mechanical turk separating workers who create value for the platform from those who profit from their labor.
we are all of us employed by an invisible corporation that refuses to tell us what it wants while punishing us severely for not being able to guess. what's worse is that we are expected to be okay with this state of affairs in perpetuity.

it is extremely funny how often nft guys, and even people writing nft-critical articles, straight up just don't know how nfts work. for instance: did you know that nft art is NOT stored on the blockchain?
if you buy an nft, the only thing actually on the blockchain is a hyperlink. the art itself is stored on a server just like any other digital file, likely one owned by the company producing that particular brand of nft.
