When you see Leftists get wrapped up in antisemitic notions of Jewish control causing global harm, it can devolve into a sparring match over if something is or isn’t antisemitic. And often we can’t control whether that person or group will see the harm they’re perpetuating. 1/5 What might help more is to open a conversation with many activist groups & leaders in your area. Ask them: “Where do you believe harm comes from?” Political communities need to know what they think is at the root of our world’s social problems. Who’s calling the shots? 2/5

It’s very impt that orgs *not* directly targeted by ADL’s new public commitment to mark anti-Zionism as antisemitism step forward now and rebuke ADL. The risk to activists in @Nationalsjp, @jvplive and @CAIRNational is clear, but the impacts of this will go further. 1/7 The Jewish Right is seeking a big gain in how much turf it controls politically in the US; probably supported by even more powerful backers in the Christian Right, who have their own motives for subjugating Palestinians. This is a “No Pasaran” situation. 2/7

Many Jews are concerned right now about antisemitic attacks. And, many Jews are highly skeptical of ADL and others’ rhetoric about a “surge” of antisemitism. Putting aside for the moment what the data is & isn’t saying, I want to talk about how Jews’ fears are used. 1/11 Predictably, the immediate answer of mainstream Jewish leaders to fears of antisemitism is to call on Jews legislators to support heightened policing powers & even militarization. Jewish fears are being deployed to serve a political purpose- to strengthen the carceral state. 2/11
