There's a whole thing that I think a lot of scientists don't seem to appreciate when thought-experimenting alternative models for academic publishing:

It costs money. And making it more accessible and equitable probably costs more time and money.

The question is, "Who pays?" In the traditional system before open access and whatnot, university libraries were the ones who paid. And we paid with our time as volunteer editors and reviewers. And for-profit journal publishers were the ones who profited (and still are, of course).

I see two very common sentiments on here:

1. We should get paid for reviewing journal articles

2. We should make publishing accessible by minimizing or eliminating APCs.

Is there anybody out there with both opinions? If so, what's the business model to go along with this? (I'm not intending this as any kind of sarcasm or snark. If there's a person out there who thinks peer reviewers should get paid but also wants to cut the cost of publishing, I'm sincerely interested in knowing how they suggest we go about this.)

In 2016, California decided to stop paying for travel to states with anti-LGBT laws. This list keeps growing, and it's now up to 18. The latest addition is Ohio.

Why Ohio? Because in June they passed a new law that allows doctors to refuse to treatment to LGBT people. On September 24, 2021, Attorney General Robert Bonta announc here's an article about the Ohio law that triggered California's travel funding ban: cincinnati.com/story/news/pol…

If you're a recently graduated student and don't have access to a funded lab for this opportunity, give a reply here!

NSF-funded PIs in BIO: 👀 Postbacs, if you're not having luck finding someone to work with on this, it's okay to email me and I'll see how well I can work the angles to make a connection.

Do you want your proposal to be more competitive? Then make sure that your broader impacts have solid methods grounded in the literature, a plan to assess outcomes, and are budgeted with resources needed to do the job well. You don’t need to hit every broader impacts button. You just need to do what you are doing well, and you convince the reviewer that you’re taking it seriously by giving it thought and demonstrating that you have learned what it takes to do your BI so it will actually have impact.

This hedge fund thing should shine more light on how the entire tax code is designed to increase the wealth of people who don't even have to work for a living. I just learned a new thing about wealthy people don't get taxed that I find absolutely scandalous. A close family member died recently, and so for the first time ever, I inherited some stock, which was part of a trust.

NSF has been funding the ADVANCE program since 2001, generating oodles of data to demonstrate what happens when women are put in charge of universities. If you're looking for data about what happens when we implement measures to improve equity for women in STEM, search for 'NSF ADVANCE' in google scholar. So many students in my department had their inquiry emails to prospective grad advisors completely ignored.

These are students who worked with their advisors to write good inquiry emails. I don't mean a few people lost track. It's the norm.

Do better, people. I know perfectly well that this doesn't happen to students who are working with big name PIs, or are enrolled in expensive liberal arts colleges, or don't have Latinx surnames.

I literally know who you are. Shame on you.

Don’t let The Man fool you. We won’t fix the climate crisis by individually changing our diets or our transportation.

We have to change policies, laws, and energy infrastructure. This is the climate action we need.

Sure, go veg, take public transit, etc. But that’s just gravy. I feel like recycling is the biggest con ever by fossil fuel industry. Instead of actually reducing carbon emissions, people have been pacified by having two trash cans instead of one.

Please stop asking me to recruit students and share postings for unpaid research internships. One student researching in my lab is homeless. Literally - no bed of their own. The last thing I'm going to do is ask them to work for free.
