40 years ago today I started cycling from Land's End to John o'Groats with my friend Mark.

A levels were done, we were 18 and fit, we had a tent, two racers, a map of the UK, a sense of the prevailing winds, and I had money in a Post Office book. Howard Lake at Land's End, outside the pub in the dark. This was us the night before. Penzance was the furthest we could travel by train. So we cycled to Land's End that evening, camped, and started on the ride early the next morning. Mark with our two racing bikes and their panniers outside Penzance railway station, with a car, van and red telephone box in the background.
