His phone rang at 3:17am.
"We have a problem."
Those four words. Every backend engineer who has ever been on-call knows exactly what they do to your stomach.

$4 million in transactions had vanished. Not failed. Not pending.
Vanished.
What happened in the next 6 hours — is the most important backend story I know. 🧵 Tosin was the lead backend engineer at a Nigerian payment company.
On-call rotation. Third week in a row covering for a colleague. 3:17am on a Wednesday.

He sat up. Opened his laptop. First check: transaction logs.
847 transactions. Status: COMPLETED on their side. Status: NOT RECEIVED on the bank's side.
$4 million in completed transactions — that the bank had no record of processing.

The money had left their system. It hadn't arrived anywhere.
It was in the gap between two systems. In the dark space between confirmed and received.

In 2023 a Nigerian developer was deported from the UK.
Visa expired. No warning. Escorted onto a plane. Landed in Lagos with £200 and a laptop.

By 2025 he had built a company that the same UK government paid to use.
This is that story 🧵 The deportation broke him.
Not physically.
Psychologically.

He had built 4 years of his life in London.
Friends. Career. Apartment. Routine.
Gone in one immigration enforcement visit.

He landed in Lagos and sat in the airport for 3 hours.
Not waiting for anything.

Just sitting.
Processing the fact that his entire plan had just been cancelled.
