🧵 The impact of Florida’s new anti-homeless law is cruel. There’s a homeless guy downtown who I give a few bucks to periodically. He’s been out of jail for a year and he’s trying to get on his feet. Applying for jobs, trying to get housing (difficult), doing what he can, etc. But there’s no support system for returning citizens. Most landlords won’t rent to ex-cons and some jobs won’t hire. With no family, some of these folks are left to the streets on their own. We have a system that permanently criminalizes those who’ve paid their debt to society.

“Ban TikTok, because it collects your data and shares it with foreign governments”, they say.

Yet, Facebook/Meta, Google, and all the rest collect our data and sell it to god knows who. Facebook is constantly in trouble for letting Russian government entities abuse its platform. The answer isn’t an unprecedented ban on a social media app. The answer is legislation that tackles privacy concerns re: user metadata.

I’d also like to see the U.S. Gov’t stop illegally collecting our data and storing it at the NSA, and repeal the unconstitutional PATRIOT ACT.

JFC. It's sad to see so many people on my timeline conflating social programs and social democracy with democratic socialism. The least y'all could do is read up on the difference. Democratic socialism = anti-capitalism. Social Democracy = reformed capitalism. Social programs ≠ socialism. Fire departments, police, social security ≠ socialism.
