If someone unknowingly commits major shirk, could they still be excused?

Many people, on both ends of the spectrum, often use vague language, which leads to inconsistencies in their arguments. The real issue is not simply whether an act or belief is labelled as "major shirk."

The distinction actually lies between acts or beliefs of apostasy that are clear and those that are ambiguous.

The question now arises: can forms of shirk ever be unclear? The short answer: yes.

Explaining the statement attributed to ibn ʻAbbās رضي الله عنه in a debate with ʻUrwah ibn al-Zubayr رضي الله عنهم أجمعين, “It is as if stones will soon rain down upon you from the sky! I say, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,’ and you say, ‘Abū Bakr and ʻUmar said.’” Image This statement is often repeated when the words of the aʼimmah are in opposition to seemingly clear textual evidences or when there is a lack of respect for a particular juristic opinion held by aʼimmah of Islam.

Ibn Masʻūd said, “If one of you fears a ruler’s arrogance or oppression, say, ‘O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the great throne, safeguard me from so-and-so and from his followers—from your creation—who seek to transgress and tyrannize me.
Image Your security is honoured and praise for you is venerated. There is no deity worthy of worship except you.’”

This ʼAshʻarī used the same argument as the Jahmiyyah, and I will present proof of this as well as ʼImām ʼAḥmad’s refutation. ʼImām ʼAḥmad said, “[The Jahmī uses] Allah’s Statement: ﴾Certainly, We have made it a Quran in Arabic.﴿ He claimed that [the words] ‘He made’ mean ‘He created,’ so everything that is made is created. He used a word from the mutashābih words to rebuttal [as a way] of wanting ImageImage

I’ve seen this image and tweet repeatedly brought up, and I thought I’d respond to it. Our brother @RaadTheShepherd has already clarified this person’s distortion of ibn Kathīr’s intent, but I will elaborate on ibn Kathīr’s own view briefly.

I’ll be proving the authenticity of this ʼathar attributed to Ḥammād ibn Zayd in which makān is affirmed for Allah. Image ʼImām al-ʻUqaylī brings it in his book aḍ-Ḍuʻafāʼ al-Kabīr.

Bishr ibn as-Sarī asked Ḥammād ibn Zayd, “O ʼAbū ʼIsmāʻīl, the ḥadīth in which it says Allah تبارك وتعالى descends to the lowest heaven, [does it mean] He shifts from place to place?” Ḥammād remained silent.

We have a new ʼAshʻarī player asking to be refuted.
I’ll be providing proofs to show that the salaf did in fact affirm the apparent meaning through explicit quotes. I have previously shown how the salaf used the saying, “Pass it on as it came,” to affirm a meaning.

I’ll be responding to all of his lies on ʼImām ʼAḥmad. Let’s start with this first report that he brings up. I’ll be examining this through four different angles.

[1] ʼImām ʼAḥmad was asked about seeing Allah. Nobody does tafwīḍ al-maʻnā of this. Hence, it can be understood as not distorting its meaning. Image

[1] What is the Maḏhab of the Salaf?
[2] Its Misusage
[3] Refuting this Misusage [1] It’s very clear that the maḏhab of the salaf is to pass on Allah’s attributes as they came without modality. We have numerous scholars affirming this for example ʼImām az-Zuhrī, ʼImām ʼAḥmad, ʼAbū Dawūd as-Sijistānī, ibn Kathīr, amongst many others. ImageImageImageImage

[1] Ibn Kathīr’s View
[2] Is this Report Reliable?
[3] The View of the ʼAhl ul-ʼAthar [1] Ibn Kathīr writes, in his tafsīr, that Allah will come however He wills. This is a clear affirmation of ʼafʻāl al-ikhtiyāriyyah which is kufr al-ʼakbar according to the ʼAshʻariyyah. Image
