1/n. The answer is 8 hours. 57% answered correctly.
Thanks to all who voted!
The question highlights a “point” that Marx says is “crucial to an understanding of political economy”.

To explain why 8 hours, let’s re-examine Part 1 of Capital.
2/n. Commodities are use-values & values. As values they are “crystals” of a “social substance”. The substance is “human labor-power expended without regard to the form” (“human labor in the abstract”). Commodities are “merely congealed quantities of homogeneous labor”.

1/n A single thread that summarizes my talk, "Marx, Faraday and the Spectral Objectivity of Value". ianwrightsite.wordpress.com/2023/09/13/mar… 2/n Marx mentions table-turning (the 19th century fad of summoning spirits into tables) at the beginning of his chapter on commodity fetishism. A fetish is an ordinary object that we believe is extraordinarily ensouled. Table-turning is key to understanding commodity fetishism. Image

(1/5) Cultural radicalism is easily confused with revolutionary substance. E.g., Peter Carroll, founder of 90s Chaos Magic, convened 100s of magicians to collectively astral project back in time to observe the beginning of the universe. They returned with new empirical data ... Image (2/5) ... which led Carroll to embark on a decades long project to re-found cosmology and physics on magical principles. He has written on "three-dimensional time", "hypersphere cosmology" and quantum equations of magic. Enter his mind maze here: specularium.org

"Socially necessary labour time" is a property of the conditions of production, the material productivity of labour processes. It is not a property of exchange in the market or the level of demand. "Socially necessary" controls for heterogeneity in the conditions of production. Image If conditions of production change (e.g. weather reduces crop yields) then values change. The value of a commodity does not change with its price.
(The value typically differs quantitatively from value realised in exchange, i.e. its price divided by the average wage rate). Image

1/n The UK government has flipped from a mitigation strategy (slow the transmission rate but allow population-wide infection) to a suppression strategy (halt transmission and avoid population-wide infection) in the last few days. Notably UK's strategy was an outlier. #coronavirus 2/n The Conservatives are the political representatives of finance capital and their primary concern is ensuring the wealthy (those that can live off their capital, and do not need to work) continue to extract value from all economic activities.
