(1/3) What we today consider King County is the ancestral homeland of the Coast Salish peoples.
🌊 Coast Salish-speaking peoples have lived along the Salish Sea—Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia—for 10,000+ years.
(2/3) 🗣️ The term “Coast Salish” refers to a language family of 2 dozen languages & dialects & is used to indicate the cultural group of indigenous peoples who speak/spoke these. Each tribal group has its own name for themselves, as you can see from the map below.
