The 2021 AI Index Report - a thread: this year we significantly expanded the amount of data available in the report and worked with a broader set of external organizations to calibrate our data. Here are the top 9 takeaways: 1/9 AI investment in drug design and discovery increased significantly: “Drugs, Cancer, Molecular, Drug Discovery” received the greatest amount of private AI investment in 2020, with more than USD 13.8 billion, 4.5 times higher than 2019.

Measurement in AI Policy - a thread: our latest paper (arxiv.org/pdf/2009.09071…) surveyed opportunities & challenges in measuring AI systems and their impact based on a recent @StanfordHAI workshop. Here are the 6 key challenges we identified that can help AI policymaking: 1. How do we define AI? This question has significant downstream effects on the assessment of R&D productivity, public/private investment, labor market impact, etc. A broadly accepted definition would facilitate collaboration among organizations collecting AI-related data.
