1) On the face recognition/verification thing, I have some Thoughts, being a privacy lawyer, sg qualified lawyer and an activist. Hold on to your hats because this will be a long rant and it is literally my living here. 2) I work in the EU in a Pte co to manage their privacy program. Bc on GDPR I’m on my toes every single damn day. B4 that I did some privacy/in house work in Sg and there is a huge gulf in how privacy is perceived here and SG

1) what this story illustrates is that this law doesn’t deter traffickers it just makes a scapegoat out of (unwitting) drug mules

2) 18-24 yr old Chinese men in uni are treated like kids for their crimes but god forbid we extend the same sympathy to young poor brown/black men I mean I’m far more scared of all those men who take photos/videos of women in showers, or those who beat up migrant men to show off their martial arts skills, or those who strangle their girlfriends. They are the bigger threat to society than some random drug mule ever will be.

I’ll stop treating them like Serena Joy when they manage to get
- equality for actually-born babies in health, education and all other outcomes
- global ability for people to freely choose when and how they get pregnant
- a global end to rape and sexual assault /contd - an end to pregnancy violence and discrimination
- an end to domestic violence
- a reasonable standard of living for every human being alive: that means all their basic needs are met w/o struggle and there is no poverty
- end to mortality during childbirth

I’m a gamer and a now-ambivalent HP fan. I won’t buy the new HP game anw out of boycott instinct but I think it goes too far to say buying it is not ok. There are several things I boycott I don’t judge others for not boycotting. For eg Uber. Uber is a horrible sexist company and they are horrible to both employees and their users. But some disabled ppl rely on it. I haven’t bought anything from Barilla for years. I’d never work for Big Oil, Tobacco or Arms/Defence but some ppl need to feed their families.

This. I’m tired of the liberal greenies talking about having children as a poisonous move for the planet. I get really annoyed by people who didn’t want kids anyway framing their choice as a sacrifice for the environment. How is it a sacrifice when you didn’t want them at all? Like no one has to have kids. Having one is YOUR choice and no one should take that away from you. If you don’t want to have them, that’s fine. But stop dumping on people who do.

This thread went viral for some reason so I want to add some real examples of free riders in SG

1) riding on your father’s reputation to become the leader of your party and the PM for more than a decade (aka nepotism)

2) riding on established people to get elected into GRC 3) not doing anything worth mentioning and getting senior govt leadership roles because you are someone’s buddy from army (aka nepotism)

4) taking credit for Pinkdot raising money off local companies after banning them from fundraising from oversees companies (aka hypocrisy)

Woooh, so put on your seatbelts, we are going for a ride on a wild political thread, everyone.

1) Hey at least he is holding true to his words, instead of helping Singaporeans, he is trying to fix the opposition, as PM Lee said several years ago.

asiaone.com/singapore/free… 2) but let’s address this “free rider” problem. As many have pointed out, this is a gross characterisation of the citizens he is serving. People have assumed he just used the wrong wrongly but maybe, just maybe... he meant exactly what he said?

Look I know all legal shows get shit wrong about the law all the time but Suits really takes the damn cake.

1) Why do all the lawyers only seem to do anything to get back at each other? In reality we are far too busy for that kind of shit 2) why do they act like they can bring suit and make offers on behalf of clients without authorisation? Half the show is about lawyers who are concocting legal suits to manipulate situations. As an in house lawyer who instructs external counsel, no fucking way that happens

1) So as some of you know, Bavaria went into lockdown at midnight. What that means - no going out and congregating in grps. You can go out to visit the doctor, go to work and buy supplies, and for walks with ppl living in the same household. Non-compliance can be 25k euro fine. 2) borders are already closed, school and daycare are closed. this is frankly unprecedented in my adult life. I’ll probably be fine but I don’t know what the long term impact is going to be. For kids, for farmers for freelancers, for small business owners, and so on.

I agree with the general sentiment here but as someone who lived in SEA surrounded by Muslim majority countries, there are more layers here and I think the OP misses them. /Contd Let’s start with the obvious - islamophobia is bad, as is any other kind of phobia. But in our part of the world, Muslim majorities have the political power in two multi-religious/cultural countries and you bet they beat that drum whenever they can and oppress minorities

Thread about my current state of utter confusion as an Asian outsider looking at the ridiculous state of politics today, but particularly wrt the whole “Judaism as a nation” controversy.

👇🏾 1) firstly as someone who lived in Asia most of her life I rarely met Jewish people. My first exposure to the concept of Judaism was probably about reading about the Holocaust. I can’t tell you why but around 12 or so I went through a phase of reading all I could about it

1) The whole thing with AOC kinda brings up incredibly complex interconnected topics btwn feminism and capitalism, and the participation thereof. I live in Munich and imma tell you how much it costs for me to present as a professional in my job as a privacy lawyer, esp as a WOC. Image 2) hair. A medium-range haircut w/o any frills at all from a hairdresser who doesn’t give a shit will cost €30 every 3 months. I don’t colour. But on top of that I have to spend money on hair masks and hair products to maintain hair health and look. €100-200 per yr at least

1) you can be friends with people who think differently. In fact you should. If all your friends have identical beliefs, sthg is wrong

2) but if that person has actively participated in the oppression of political minorities with the power they have... then no. I have a real life and smaller stake eg of this - one of my friends declared herself ex-gay. Whatever, who cares if they want to be unhappy. Their business. But I cut off that tenuous friendship the second they posted a keep377A petition on their facebook.

Harassment of Kirsten by state media, @kshanmugam and others is not too different from the harassment of @GretaThunberg by climate change science deniers. A thread. Because it is happening at the same time my brain is drawing a connection between the two. Of course, GT is getting harassed especially because she is a girl, underage and does not present herself as a sexual target to men. A lot of people can’t handle this.

1/ Literally every single brown person in SG has said something about brown face and I’m really proud of them and I don’t need to repeat what they said. But let’s talk a little bit about brown skin and what it means. For reference, me at pride in bi pride flag colours. Image 2/ I love my skin colour. Like, I really love it, it is not some kind of fake pride. I think it is one of my best features and truthfully on some days I actually wish I were naturally a little darker and in summer I get my wish. But this hasn’t always been true for me.

As a data privacy lawyer, I don’t trust Huawei, ZTE or other Chinese tech companies. Is that rational? Maybe, maybe not. But what we are seeing is not about Huawei, but proof that China actually can’t have its cake and eat it. What do I mean? 2) China’s surveillance state is well established. Not only is it an active surveillance state but it is an active interference state. The US, for all its talk about freedoms is getting to be a surveillance state too but it is not necessarily an interference state.

14 years after coming out, 12 years of activism and I still don’t know what the hell to do with people who are conflicted about religion and sexuality, other than direct them to existing resources. This is just something I absolutely cannot relate to nor understand at any level. I never went through a period when I was conflicted btwn my sexuality and anything else. The only confusion I experienced was figuring out whether I was gay straight or bi. Once I did, religion, culture or societal homophobia had no impact on me. I know this story is quite rare.

For all the app developers and entrepreneurs out there, this idea is completely free and I’ll pay good money for this product if you make it: an app that allows families/couples to coordinate schedules and calendars, keep track of all their various to-do lists and impt contacts This needs to work cross-platform, should preserve privacy and should be reasonably priced. Right now the only things that offer even half of this functionality are enterprise apps like slack and they are not made for families

1) Despite my social media presence, I’m actually a private person and I don’t share a lot of my own private life. I’m going to make an exception for a PSA and talk about something deeply personal and uncomfortable. Doctors and how they treat weight. 2) Several years ago, shortly after I became single again I lost a lot of weight through a low carb diet and kept if off for a couple of years. And then I met my husband, started with implanon and also life became super stressful (work and studies mostly) and I gained it all back

I have no idea who created the modern Singaporean Chinese wedding banquet but it combines all the worst elements of weddings from everywhere
- expensive
- a lot of guests
- food that comes in courses (so you can’t eat quickly & leave)
- awful food
- boring as hell
- no dancing In contrast
- South Indian weddings have a lot of guests but you can come and go instead of waiting for hours for the last course. Food is awesome.
- North Indian weddings have dancing. Food is awesome
- western weddings have dancing and usually a smaller guest list. Food is ok
