Imagine if we measured distances using zucchinis.

Stay with me here. There is a point!

So I calculate the distance between my house and my neighbor's house using a zucchini from my garden. I announce that my house is 37 zucchinis from my neighbor's house. My neighbor decides to check this. She uses a zucchini from her garden. She comes up with a 25-zucchini distance. "Indu's lying!" she cries out at the town meeting. "She is exaggerating the distance between our homes! She is untrustworthy! Don't believe her."

Set aside the “South Asian insider experts” - they’re predictable. I continue to be amazed by the non-“South Asians” who are demonstrably more nuanced in their geopolitical analysis in nearly every region of the world and are apparently mind-numb when it comes to India & Hindus. When a journalist openly denies the Bengali Hindu genocide - that was recognized two years earlier by the U.S. Congress as a Hindu genocide - how do the people who are reading that article continue to believe the journalist? How does the journalist stay employed? @NBCNews ?

One of main arguments made by advocates in favor anti-caste discrimination laws and policies *in the United States* is that "upper caste Hindus import their casteist behaviors wherever they immigrate" and that "this is spreading like a disease."

Let's unpack this past rhetoric. In Pew's 2021 survey study on caste in India, < 25% of respondents reported seeing evidence of widespread discrimination against SC (20%), ST (19%) or OBC (16%). 13% of those who identify with OBC reported "a lot of discrimination against Backward Classes."

I always find it fascinating and revealing to receive this kind of response. No, WhatsApp University is obviously not a legitimate degree granting institution.

However. Image There’s a long, sordid history of western universities studying and “learning and teaching” about non-western civilizations as objects thru a warped colonial lens, incl. the ways they translate and conceptualize language. This is well recognized. Except when it comes to Hinduism.

Ass. Prof Truschke just uploaded this. I have to read it, still, but here are some initial observations from the abstract. (Note: It's probably not a good idea for everyone to download it because that will only feed her narcissism.)
