Muslims are people with sentiments and rights. They need to be respected for who they are and should be able to live freely as they please.
Islam, on the other hand, is a (religious) philosophy, an idea, a set of beliefs.

The backlash on this FGM issue is encouraging, shows that we have people who care about protecting children and human rights.
However, when it came to condemning the root cause, we have fail, every time.
It's Islam and I will tell you why.
Islam does have a failure to protect children issue, sexual violence against women and children issue, an FGM issue.
There's Hadith supporting the position that female circumcision is at least allowed, if not recommended or a Sunnah (forgetting the extreme position of wajib).
Say a few decades back, few hesitated to give their teen daughters away as child brides. They didn't concern themselves with the harm they caused to those girls or to the society. They in fact would have never contemplated over the issue.
@8laam However, that can't be said to be true of today's parents. We know how harmful it is. We know what smart, independent women who are not just seen as wives and mothers does to society and we like where we are are headed.
So, what did the religious did?
They fixed religion.
As for islamophobia, it implies that Islam is beyond criticism; it is not.
Freedom of expression coupled with freedom of and from religion dictates that every idea (religious or not) can and will be criticized and ridiculed (even without merit).

Islam, as a religion is not special. It's equally fictitious as the rest.
Contrary to popular belief, the reason why I criticize and ridicule Islam more than others, isn't that I get paid by the Zionists.
Here, I mention a few.
1. I was born, raised and live in a Muslim come. I encounter the restrains forced on me by Islam daily, making it a personal struggle. I do not face such from any other religion or philosophy.
