Having thought about it some more, here's another response to Trudeau's hand gun ban and comments about self defense.

When someone opposes tightening restrictions on guns here in Canada, the retort is often, "Do you really want to be like the United States?"

1) But that's a false dichotomy I think. For instance, Canada has a single payer, universal public Healthcare system. Whenever we talk about bringing in more privatization the retort is always, "So you want American style Healthcare??!?

Seriously, I'd encourage anyone and everyone who is able, to go out and get your firearms license (get your hunters ed course done too
while you're at it). For firearms in Canada, there's two parts you should get:
PAL - Non Restricted Firearms License
RPAL - Restricted Firearms License

The RPAL allows you to get a handgun. The legislation isn't passed yet, might take most of the year. So there's still time.
