"Near mode" and "far mode" are two different thinking styles we all engage in. Consider your emotions at hearing "3,000 people died in a plane crash last year" vs "my mother died in a plane crash last year". Far mode is where we engage with the world with analytical detachment; near mode is visceral and close. Far mode is cognitively expensive. Near mode is emotionally expensive.
