There is such a cruel irony about the passing of Robin Miller. Robin always had the perfect thing to say when eulogizing his heroes- often times upon the most unexpected of losses.
Yet, with his passing, there is seemingly no one to do the same for him. Both because his ability was without peer- but, also, because it’s impossible to summarize what he was. Quite simply- to so many people from so many corners- Robin Miller was their favorite person. He was the most encouraging, loyal, knowledgable and dedicated friend you could ever have.He defined what

Much will be said, rightly so, upon the passing of Jerry Harkness, about his contribution to civil rights within basketball.
He, however, was more than just a major player towards the integration of basketball & the NCAA tourney.
He decided to pursue basketball after a chance encounter with Jackie Robinson. Robinson encouraged Harkness to pursue hoops. His pre game handshake before facing Mississippi State in the 1963 NCAA tourney was a watershed moment.
It was, perhaps, after his playing career- which led Harkness to a brief stint with the @Pacers

I have a huge favor to ask. It won’t cost you a cent, you won’t have to go anywhere, and it won’t take any longer than it will take to read this. It is for the people you see pictured below. I never met them. But, I’d like to introduce you. Thanks for reading this thread. Earlier today, I was driving near the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation Cemetery, and realized it’s the final resting place of a friend. I pulled in. There was one other person in the cemetery- sitting next to a headstone, with a large water jug. I quietly nodded and asked how he

The 17th feature of #20TriumphsIn20Days is Matt, 22. A native of Wabash, he enjoys time at home with his “pet” pigs Oreo, Sprinkles, Rusty & Fudge. Sure- he understands they’re part of a working farm- but Matt likes that “they’re smart in their own way.”
He can relate. Thread👇 Matt grew up in Wabash like most kids. Social, while introspective, he enjoyed most of his classes and felt the same as everyone else. After school he enjoyed watching nearly every sport- @IUHoosiers @Colts, the @Yankees & @FloridaGators have become his favorites- but when he

Today’s #20TriumphsIn20Days features Josh, 21. As a youngster, Josh felt somethin different. His brain “was on overdrive”, & only music seemed to soothe him. “I’m obsessed with music”, he says.
Now he’s moving to a new beat- and it’s in harmony with where h needs to be. Thread👇 The signs were there as early as pre school. The glue bottles. Josh formed a bit of an obsession with them. “I had this habit”, Josh recalls with a sheepish grin. “The dried glue on the bottles. I’d pick it all off. Normal people don’t pick off glue. I felt like the weird kid.”

Today, for #20TriumphsIn20Days, features Alec, 23.
Born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a joint degeneration, Alec dreamed of playing in the NBA. He says he didn’t make it, not because of his ailment, but rather, because he’s 5’4”.
He’s finding new heights. Thread: Image He begins by telling me of his love of basketball. A 2016 North Central grad, Alec is clearly a student of the game. He marvels over the stats of Russell Westbrook, admires the skill set of Kevin Durant- but he likes small market teams. The Thunder. The Pacers. Alec identifies

Today, #20TriumphsIn20Days features Leslie, 29. While her story is ultimately of triumph, it involves a share of heart ache. I’ve done a dozen of these features thus far, & I’ll admit: While impartiality is always a priority, I find myself pulling the hardest for Leslie. Thread👇 Image The heart ache. We’ll begin there. For Leslie, it was a few years ago. The chest pains. The shortness of breath. It seemed unusual for a woman in her 20s. But, was it? That heart had been through so much, you see.
Start with the bullying. It was there as far back as she can

I’m bored, so figured I’d share a story that happened to me about 10 years ago. It’s rooted in my own arrogance, of sorts, and ended in the ultimate lesson of humility and humanity. It took place in the great state of Mississippi. Thread👇 Back around 2010, I was only working in spring & summer- I had fall & winters totally free. Despite living in cold weather climates my entire life, I QUICKLY tire of gray skies, ice & snow. So, around February, I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: I’d escape to warmer weather

If you’ve ever driven to the Children’s Museum, you’ve upassed this house 100 times. In its history is the story of a man who once went out the backdoor to avoid the Press- & they weren’t there to ask of the man he’d killed 2 years earlier. Rather, a triumph brought them.Thread👇 On July 17, 1889, in Odon, IN, Dawson was born into a family of engineers. His father worked for the Marmon motor company, the same company for which Joe and his brother would later serve as engineers. Yet it was not designing cars, but racing them, in which Joe Dawson made a

Nestled in section 36 of Crown Hill Cemetery lies the inconspicuous marker of John D. Aitken. While every marker of Crown Hill carries with it a story, Aitken’s is rooted as a pioneer in one of the most iconic venues in the city- and the world. It’s relevant today. Thread👇 Image “Johnny Aitken” was born in Indianapolis in 1886, and, while little is known of his upbringing, by young adulthood he became a key figure in the fledgling automobile industry- notably auto racing. Like many who became racers of that era, Aitken’s primary job was as an employee

So, this is the final day in Indianapolis for @RayCortopassi , as he leaves @FOX59 for his hm, Chicago. I had the pleasure of working w/Ray in the early part of his career, and have been fortunate to know him throughout.
The dude has not changed one iota. Never did. Thread👇 When I first met Ray, I was a grunt in the @wrtv sports office, and he had just been hired as a new anchor. He was walking through The Fashion Mall with his wife, and their newborn in a stroller. I walked up, introduced myself and we chatted. He was excited to come to Indy

I’m on a group text with HS friends, & we were reminiscing about our coming of age, & the challenges their kids face today. It led to a story from Middle School, & one I hope offers a lesson for kids today. It’s long, I apologize, but hopefully you’ll humor me & read.
Thread👇 I attended @EastwoodMS from 1984-87. It was a great school and we had great times. Among the many great things about Eastwood was this awesome variation of dodgeball we would play several times a week. It was standard dodgeball played in the basketball gym, but our teachers added

Tomorrow’s Indianapolis 500 will be surreal without the traditional largest collection of humanity assembled in one place. There’s no denying that. However, it’s my hope we can, together from afar, illustrate, in our own ways, why this event is so special. Thread👇 I’ve shared much of this before, so if repetitive, I apologize. If you are not a fan or from Indianapolis, perhaps this will shed light on why this event is so special.
I grew up in central Indiana, and 1st attended the Indy 500 in 1981, at the age of 8. Everything about that

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of comments and posts about dowtown Indy’s increasing homeless population. While I am neither a social worker or civic leader, I wanted to share my observations & possible explanations, as I understand them, based on my learnings. Thread👇 In 1994, allegations of patient abuse led to the closing of Central State Hospital, which, at one time, provided mental health programs to more than 2,000 residential patients. In fact, many of the CS patients of the 1st half of the 20th Century are still there- buried in mass or

Lately, I’ve seen and read a lot of the rehashed comments about the underlying racism in the movie “Hoosiers”. I think it’s an interesting discussion, and wanted to perhaps shed some light on it.
Thread 👇 I’ve heard such commentary about the movie for years. Certainly, the assocation to 1950s Indiana and racism is valid. Indianapis was still a socially segregated city at that time, with african american students attending Crispus Attucks High School on the city’s near west side.

Today, for my final of 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches with 30 people @WheelerMission, I met Jami, 40. She was 25 when she stood at her Mom’s death bed, and she had a choice: free herself, or free her Mother. She chose her Mom. 15 years later, it’s finally her turn. Thread👇 Image Heart failure was the reason. An ailing heart, both figuratively and literally, as the reason the breaths were fading. Jami stood, watching over, knowing her next words to her Mom may well be her last. “What angers me most, is in that moment, I never got to say what she’d done to

Today, for the 29th of my 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches with 30 people @WheelerMission, I ate with Steve, 43. He came to the mission just 2 weeks ago, a man who cried as he waited for their door to open. What it’s done has opened new doors, to what he hopes are new beginnings. Thread👇 Image The scars down his leg are the constant reminder of where he’s been. In their own weird way, they’re symbolic of the tragedy that may have sent him down that path- ubiquotous images of the boulder in his stream. The rough line of skin starts at his upper thigh and snakes its

Today, for my 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches w/ 30 people @WheelerMission, I’m featuring Landon, 50s. I met with him just before COVID, & he told me about coming to Indy with just one person. When she passed, Landon found himself all alone. He had no idea how lonesome it’d be. Thread👇 Image He remembers the ride to Indianapolis. Doesn’t remember every specific- after all, when he tells me he’s only ever been to two states, I remind him he had to travel through at least 4 to get from his native Utah. He wasn’t worried about it at the time, you see, because he was

Today for my 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches with 30 people @WheelerMission, I ate w/3 year old Leo & his mom, Spirit. Leo told me they’re going to have a home soon. Spirit loves Leo looking at his future with optimism, because at far too young an age, she was battling her past. Thread👇 Image He says it to her every morning. Each day Leo wakes up in the @WheelerMission shelter for women & children, and asks his Mom if they can leave soon. It’s not that it’s a bad place- he’s nurtured and his boundless energy is met with a plethora of available activities. The

Today, for my 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches w/ 30 people @WheelerMission, I met Margie, 54.
It was emotional, as Margie opened up about all the people for which she has cared. Then the tears came. By the time she wiped them away, the vision of her future was more clear.
Thread👇 Image She felt like it happened every time she checked her watch. Didn’t matter if it was AM or PM- they are one in the same when you’re living in a tent in chilly months- she always seemed to glance at the same time: 2:32. She knew it was some sort of sign, seeing the time that was

Today, as part of my 30 @HotBoxPizza lunches w/30 people @WheelerMission, I met Blondie, 49. The daughter of an Army vet from just south of Indy, she told her Dad she never wanted to have to be protected by a man. But when she became the protector, things went wrong. Thread👇 Image Her childood was decent, she says, with the exception of that need for extra attention. Not unusual, she admits, for a middle child. Maybe that’s why she fell so hard for her high school sweetheart, forgoing her final semester to marry at such a young age. Despite the less than
