Don't burn yourself out trying to change the culture of an organization where you are not in a position of power.

My advice for young people starting out in their careers: choose leaders who are competent, compassionate, and secure in themselves (not just pretending to be).

Careers are long, and early role models have a disproportionately large impact on your trajectory—for better or worse. We can't choose our parents/families we’re born into. But you can choose what teams to join/leaders to follow!

The rate of learning in early-career jobs is just astounding. Whenever you can, look to surround yourself with the best, most authentic people you can find.

As the light at the end of the covid tunnel approaches, I've been hearing friends voicing a new type of anxiety and anticipatory grief.

I'm linking to some helpful reads here, please add on anything that you think might be helpful to others ⤵️ "You convince yourself you’re ready to rejoin the world, you’re doing pretty okay, and then, days, weeks, months, even years down the line, something breaks inside you. Grief metastasizes when neglected." @annehelen annehelen.substack.com/p/no-im-not-re…

Are you a manager that happens to identify as white and male? I have a game we can play!

k here’s how it works: in conversations about hiring and diversity, all you have to do is NOT say, “...yeah but we should hire the best person” – and you win! 🎉 I’ve heard this so many times and it never makes any sense b/c NO ONE is asking you to “lower the bar.”

“we need to hire the best person” is an unhelpful knee-jerk response that is rooted in the speaker’s own (often unconscious) bias, where different = bad.

Apparently a certain tech company claims to hire “top talent” with like, 10 rounds of interviews.

Yeah. No. That just means they hire people who are *willing to put up with* a ridiculously long process, and then justify it by labeling them “top talent.” Not how that works. These companies don’t know what they’re doing and they’re certainly not hiring top talent.
