Y’all want to know a secret:

Those stories about kids getting a million in scholarships or a ton of scholarships are actually an indication of inequity

A small % of students get all the big scholarships and others will get little to nothing I see it all the time. One student getting SIGNIFICANTLY MORE than what they need- I’ve had students get $$$,$$$ or $$,$$$ in excess because we apply for anything and everything

Other students, im talking over 4.0 gpa, getting nothing. Like $0 or low amounts

@balderdashHere4 @DeeSTEM_Teach @RachelLitLady1 @MoniseLSeward Lets reframe away from irresponsible. I went to law school and have significantly more debt than this. Everyone believed giving me at 23 debt that would take 20-25 years to pay off was responsible

People encouraged it. You’ll pay it all back quickly they said @balderdashHere4 @DeeSTEM_Teach @RachelLitLady1 @MoniseLSeward It’s actually almost impossible to graduate undergrad now with less than 100k yet the colleges throwing students into debt have millions if not billions in endowment and spend millions marketing to students saying it’s worth it.

We also need to make sure that the colleges don’t require it for scholarships

student can be NCAA eligible by grades & scores BUT the college can require higher grades/SAT scores

had test-optional college demand scores from NCAA athletes even after request to apply optional 🧵 And I’m not talking we want you to score around in the range of

I am talking there are colleges I’ve seen tell a student to retake the ACT because they were 1-2 points off or the score was a 1180 and they want 1200. Students who are NCAA eligible but go until score met

Let me explain what I think students need for test-optional to be effective

1. Announce test optional
2. Tell students they won’t be penalized
3. Then tell students HOW applications are reviewed with scores and without

1/ 4. Then tell students reviewing with and without certain scores is normal- some schools have test others don’t, some people have AP, others IB, others have standardize scores
5. Tell students some students have some classes others don’t, some students have opportunities

Always don’t riot

Never to the police hearing my voice stop killing people

Never to the police hearing my voice don’t harm protestors

Then invoking the names of people you kill to tell everyone to behave... y’all cause all of this... it’s you. Stop doing it Would i personally riot... who cares what the answer is

I understand witnessing people being killed over and over and over again and no consequences

How many people do you expect to kill without consequences

I have students deciding how much to pay for undergraduate, where to go, and whether it’s worth it to go to a more prestigious school to better chances of med school

I only know hidden cost of law school (bar exam, living expenses)

MDs- thoughts?
@SNMApresident @SNMA What do you wish you had considered for undergrad, did you make mistakes or choices you regret, what do you wish you knew going into undergrad, advice

When @TheAmandaGorman said she only kept the gold of what she wrote and it was through questions and reflection after Jan 6th that she came to the mother-load of gold during her @Oprah it shifted the way I decided lead as we create narratives for college essays I truly believe a good essay is never for college admission but a reflection of who you are and where you are at in the moment. It can’t be for the purpose of admissions but for self. And with the Black girls in my group it is a way to process everything and come to acceptance

When @howardrgold1 keeps showing up but is unable to answer for

1. How he was attacked
2. Why I owe him the labor of critiquing the entire article instead of focusing on the harmful parts
3. Why he perpetuates the model minority myth for Asian students

1/ ImageImageImageImage 4. Why he doubts my lived experience so much that when I said this is my students response his claim is doubtful but he believes Pierre without even verifying his I spoke to ivies claim

I spoke out yesterday in the Black alumni @virginia_tech group about how my Black student was awarded $0 in aid

I was told there is not a large pot for merit aid and we need to fundraise

Last night it was made known that a student who is incredibly wealthy was awarded $$$$ Wealthy as in did not apply for any financial aid, because they knew they did not need any

Wealthy as in their car is worth 2x-3x more than tuition

Wealthy as in their computer and equipment was worth 2x-3x tuition

Conversation with @AnnaIvey "if it is safe to test, test. If not, don't lose sleep over it." 100% agree. Most of my students are playing sports and going to in-person events so I tell them you if you are already taking risks then if you feel like you want to test do 1 or 2 But if you don't want to add another risk or aren't taking risks, don't test. Testing does not really add that much value. Ask the colleges on your list "will I lose out on aid and scholarship opportunities if I don't submit a score"

After yet another incident with a rising education celeb, this time Emily Paschall, I realized it would be a mistake to just address this at a micro level...

The problematic educeleb that silences or ignores dissent is a macro issue

1/
Which is why, I have decided to pull ALL the receipts and write a piece which has the current working title

Educelebrity and the culture of silence: why white educators and their institutions ignore and/or silence educators of color and their allies 2/

I’m going to focus the early part of the week on affirming Black Educators but I AM COMING BACK TO @educationweek more of Julie- this is the diversity @educationweek values. She has targeted this Black educator for MONTHS, told her followers to harass him and @educationweek gave her not one, not two, BUT THREE blogs

Black Lives Matter but Black educators can be HARASSED VIA EDUCATION WEEK

Once again and for the record

There is no evidence in common data that when a test is removed an essay or a recommendation takes it place

The essay was always gamed... Before now... Pretending this is new is foolish. Just because WSJ says essays weigh more because some college consultant making a buck claims it doesn't mean it is true

Everyone gets to decide how to heal from their trauma. a counter voice was presented in @educationweek-no shade on that

@educationweek has not removed the article of Julie. Julie showed who she was- she moved on to defending TJ’s admission policy that excluded Black applicants Image That’s right... Julie went from mocking a Black educator, being amplified by @educationweek on saying leave your life mattering at home, to siding with those defending a TJHS applicant process that produced no Black applicants this year

These math gaps emerging will limit opportunities for underrepresented, ELL, rural, and first-generation students for SAT/ACT

Many of my students are starting the next math in the sequence with only 2/3 of their previous math- the order was no new content when moving to virtual Rich students have tutors but those without tutors just have a gap that will either be filled by tutoring and enrichment or won't. The math tests for SAT/ACT don't truly measure ability but with this GAP and no modification we are going to inevitable see score depression

Black women used math to get America to the moon. yet, you all hear inclusion and decide diluted standards

It statistically unlikely that EVERY BLACK STUDENT this year happened to lack merit. Low probability Simple concept you advocating for TJ to remain are avoiding because you hear Black and assume inadequate so accept a statistically unlikely outcome as probable due to your racial assumption about Black ability

The open and clear anti-Black sentiment forming in supporters of TJ current system, which produced 0 black applicants is disappointing. You all keep casually coming to the students that Black students just can’t cut while knowing many TJ have similar characteristics:

1. Their parents paid for prep and/or
2. They moved to high income homes to be zoned for particular middle schools known for high acceptance rates

My father has asked the school board to consider this and not been put on the agenda. Please sign this petition, entitled, ARE YOU READY FOR THIS- I PROMISE YOU AREN'T: Don't Allow the Prince William County School Board to Name School After A Slave Owner

bit.ly/3mey9vv Hey @DrIbram heads up... this is the direction PWCS decided to go in. They removed stonewall jackson, replaced it with the name of two Black leaders in the county , but decided not to act after learning they named a school after a slave owner

The saviorism of this statement- yeah, it ain't it

"Yet Mr. Hirsch is singularly focused on helping disadvantaged kids. They “are not exposed to this information at home,” he says, so they’ll starve intellectually unless the schools provide it."

STARVED... ya'll YA'LL "Schools “are diminishing our national unity and our basic competence.”"

When did we have this unity sir... when my people were being enslaved, lynched and beaten, or incarcerated during the war on drugs... when?

I know Mr. 35% of the votes isn't trying this with me. Your position was a second TJ. 63% of voters rejected that and other positions of yours

I'll talk to @SupervisorGross who has positions a majority of Mason voters accept. She has positions the voters of Mason wanted Someone is desperate to remain relevant... Keep shouting to the Twitter feed. What is it like to scream on Twitter about positions that caused you to lose in the first place?
