The Japanese occupation of Korea was brutal for many reasons. One of the most brutal ways the Japanese terrorized the lives of Koreans was by actively suppressing the cultural history and even much of the language after the annexation.

Smaller films from more modest studios or even films that lack the support of their studio (which often happens) need the next best thing to money to get their film supported: “influence”.
Social media has made this a lot easier, but it’s still very difficult.

There were about six months in the five years I’ve lived with Slave Play where I felt a complication about my work and as though I should feel some shame or self flagellate for writing it.

Then I got a message from @Mollena who invited me to lunch and spoke w me about the play. And I felt for the weight and burden of representation lifted bc someone who had lived a life closer to that of Kaneisha than 99.9 % of ppl who had seen this play I wrote inspired by some of my favorite theory and had seen truth in it. So much so that she invited community to it.

Last night I had the pleasure of watching this wildly chaotic& horrifically beautiful piece of theatre and haven’t stopped thinking about it.
