Less than 15 months after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, @IlhanMN is quite literally being challenged by one of biggest defenders—and architects of—the system that led to his death. Some background.🧶 Ilhan’s opponent, Don Samuels was on the City Council from 2003-2013, when he chaired the Public Safety Committee. (He frames this as a good thing)

It’s that time of year again when we talk about all of @IlhanMN’s major successes as a legislator that we don’t hear about in the media!

Let's start with a huge one: the MEALS Act. In the midst of a pandemic, Rep. Omar wrote a bill to allow kids to continue to get free school breakfast and lunch. Not only that—it allowed districts to make them universal. She got it through the @EDLaborCmte Committee (which she sits on).

.@IlhanMN's conservative primary challenger is falsely claiming to be a "progressive." So let's look at the rightwing donors who have funded him throughout his career and how those forces are continuing to bankroll him. 🧵 First some background: When her primary challenger Don Samuels ran for School Board in 2014 he was supported by several massive donations from conservative billionaires.

Mass media has explicitly aligned itself with capital in an effort to paint progressives and Biden as radical, and the corporate agenda as moderate and reasonable. The Dem agenda is basically a bizarro prisoner’s dilemma—if either progressives or conservatives demand their preferred bill, everyone gets nothing. If both factions accept that the bills are a packaged deal, they can both get their preferred legislation.

I remember pitching segments on Taliban advances, major attacks on US troops, or our foundering military occupation when I was at MSNBC, only to have them spiked.

The failure in Afghanistan is also a failure of our media institutions. For the past two decades, most Americans have barely heard about the conflict, while a minority of families have borne unspeakable costs of repeated deployments and endless war.

Democrats have the House, the Senate and the Presidency and we've spent the past week talking about critical race theory, a conservative smear of @IlhanMN and blaming Democrats for gun violence.

There is no “liberal media.” @IlhanMN What all of these stories have in common: they originated in rightwing media, were amplified by the institutional Republican Party, are all premised on false information, and the narrative around them beared no resemblance to physical reality.

There are dozens of antisemitic incidents happening around the country right now.

These should shock and frighten everyone—especially Jews. Antisemitic violence has been on the rise for the past several years—roughly since Donald Trump became president. 2018 saw the largest mass shooting targeting Jews in history.

Despite what our opponents say, @IlhanMN is against all armed conflict, all violations of intl law, all arms sales and all civilian casualties.

She speaks out on this, regardless of country. So here is a partial list of some of the human rights violations she has condemned! Turkey:

AIPAC now running ads with @IlhanMN's face next to Hamas rockets.

If this isn't blatant Islamophobia, I don't know what is. For the record, @IlhanMN has repeatedly called for accountability for war crimes committed by both Israel & Hamas, and criticized officials who cherrypick which human rights abuses they call out.

With this ad, AIPAC is spreading rightwing disinformation. omar.house.gov/media/press-re…

As Jews we are told from a young age that our identities are intrinsically tied to the modern State of Israel.

It is taught to us in Hebrew School, in services, and is a deeply held belief by many of our parents, grandparents and family members. It is reinforced by media and politicians who repeatedly link Jewish identity with the State of Israel.

The flip side of this message is that criticism of Israel is a negation of our identity.

It can’t be overstated how limited progressive media infrastructure is in this country.

It puts us at a massive electoral disadvantage. There have been six Ilhan Omar articles on Foxnews dot com this week, and TEN about AOC.

There is nothing even remotely close on our side with that kind of reach or influence. Mainstream "objective" outlets maybe had one or two (often unfriendly).

I first really met @IlhanMN the night before swearing in.

She was already negotiating the Rules Package for the 116th Congress—ensuring that she would not only be allowed on the floor in a hijab, but that we would create a Select Committee on the Climate Crisis + more. She had already authored a bill—the PAUL Act (named after Paul Manafort)—that was included in the first bill introduced that Congress.

The government was shut down and within weeks she had a bill to provide childcare funding during the shutdown.

A brief thread on why the GOP is targeting @IlhanMN and why she is essential to beating Trump in MN As most Minnesotans know, CD5 is the turnout engine of the Minnesota.

Thanks to @keithellison, we were able to keep Minnesota blue in 2008 and 2012 and keep turnout high during midterm elections
