“This case is not clearly as cut and dry,” yes because it’s one of the most obvious cases of first-degree murder on earth Billy Onion

This is a bad idea but this actually seems like it's less "full-on fascism" than it is directly aimed at a few Florida-specific bloggers who pretty openly take money in exchange for positive coverage "And in 2020, Matrix even harnessed the power of the press for itself, when its employees acquired control of The Capitolist, a Tallahassee-based political news site which it used for favorable coverage, leaked records show." theguardian.com/environment/20…

New series starting at @theappeal today: In 2015, LA County created a program to divert people w/ mental illness away from jail. But data @megoconnor13 obtained shows the number of ppl in jail with mental illness has instead grown significantly since then. Here’s why: The infuriating aspect here: advocates say the county Office of Diversion and Reentry, which provides housing & services to ppl instead of jail, is *working.* It's just underfunded. Meanwhile, the LASD is eating up massive amounts of public $$

This is a transparent PR play by the Louisville PD to get ahead of what even they admit will be a scathing DOJ investigation coming soon, pure propaganda but I’m glad the NYT doesn’t employ “activists” lol Image This story is also a sympathetic profile of… this guy for some reason Image

New at @theappeal this morning from @TanaGaneva about how the “violent felon” label—which politicians & the press use to vilify people—can be wildly misleading. A “violent felony” could mean murder—or just a bar fight, purse snatching, or verbal threat theappeal.org/how-the-violen… Reform & clemency efforts have overwhelmingly favored people convicted of nonviolent drug charges—almost all people sent home for COVID distancing were nonviolent drug offenders. But people classified as “violent” make up most of the prison system and are being left behind

Andy Reid beating us using clock-management skills is a real Greek fable way to go out, huh This has ended in the most Philly way possible: Losing three straight major men’s sports championship games in a row

I don’t think most people really know the history of greedy American robber barons causing disasters at this scale, which is intentional & makes it harder for people to comprehend that yes, this is really that bad Best example that comes to mind is the time Andrew Carnegie & co modified a dam so they could do some sport-fishing and then caused a flood that killed 2,000 people history.com/news/how-ameri…

There is no actual evidence that the Super Bowl or any other sporting event increases human trafficking, this is a myth effectively started by Cindy McCain, and what this myth actually does is give cops cover to harass and arrest sex workers huffpost.com/archive/au/ent… This piece in particular pisses me off because it actually acknowledges that this is a myth but plows through the criticisms anyway and instead says it’s good because cops are watching. But police do not *help* trafficking victims, they typically just arrest them too

New from me in @theappeal newsletter: Two of CA’s most powerful politicians, Gov Gavin Newsom & LA Mayor Karen Bass, have recently launched new homeless sweeps w/ serious potential for harm—but have disguised the plans as “caring” & “compassionate” theappeal.org/california-pol… Newsom’s plan, condescendingly called “CARE Court,” lets first responders & others force ppl w/ serious mental illness on the street into psychiatric care. Numerous rights groups, incl the ACLU, tried to fight it last year to no avail.

The weirdest part of all this is just the strange and obvious kayfabe of it all, Elon is fully in charge of everything and left Baker employed up until this point? Like if the FBI was hacking into Twitter servers or whatever that's obviously bad but this is a lot of smoke and mirrors about a guy Elon kept employed as a Twitter attorney doing things that a Twitter attorney is supposed to do?

Could not dream up a more classic DOJ story: David Rivera has been called the most corrupt politician in Florida for at least a decade, he skated on numerous obvious charges until the minute he took a contract to lobby for a socialist country’s state-owned oil reserves A Miami dog track and casino once signed a $1 million “consulting” contract with Rivera’s then-70-year-old mom and the feds magically couldn’t find any corruption there, but Rivera has now done the one thing the DOJ actually exists to prosecute miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/…

The Taibbi situation is easy to parse: His Wall St reporting largely bars him from the TV pundit circuit, he probably assumed he could still make Elite Media Money from Rolling Stone but that & print media are longer viable, and so the most lucrative avenue left is turn right Plus he’s always been a combative jerk & is mad he rightfully got canceled but I think it’s the economic situation foremost

New from me & @nickpwing: The Republicans spent the last year+ trying to link Democrats to a wildly exaggerated "crime wave"—per exit polling, it was not an issue most voters actually cared about & strongly suggests police-reform is still a winning message theappeal.org/2022-midterm-e… Every time I flew home this year I was inundated with bonkers ads like this from the Oz campaign, turns out they really did not sway most people!

Don’t want to overstate a single election but there does seem to be a significant-enough middle ground of Republican voters who like the funny Trump guy on TV talking about flushing toilets but have no taste for the psychotic bug people running down-ballot I think it mostly comes down to swag and vibes, and the Dems won the overall Vibes Gap this round

Wrote about Chesa Boudin’s recall and why the US ultra-rich need to destroy criminal justice reformers by any means, or else we might start asking them to pay up to care for the nation’s poor instead of just jailing them theappeal.org/chesa-boudin-r… Was Boudin a transformative politician? Not really. But his existence at least suggested that we could perhaps do something in this country other than beat the poor down with cops. So the rich mounted a campaign to destroy him. They will keep doing this. theappeal.org/chesa-boudin-r…

I think a part of the “why was the police response quite so bad” story here is that cops are trained to hate the communities they police Yes a lot of these people are just completely hateful bigots to start, but the trainings and the daily work warps even the more tolerant of them

No matter how you feel about school shootings, a "domestic terror" law is a *terrible* idea and is a fancy way of saying "give more money to cops," except worse, and is the Democrat way of not fixing any of the underlying things that make people kill people Essentially akin to supporting the Patriot Act after 9/11, I know people are clamoring for any response to this but this is just not the thing to get behind, please

There’s a theory among some Dem/Left folks that the GOP won’t actually overturn Roe since it robs them of a decades-long motivator to go vote, but that misses a big point, which is that post-Roe, they will simply make up a new thing to get their bloodthirsty base to the polls They just completely manufactured CRT and shoplifting panics by pumping that stuff through Fox, why do they need Roe to motivate voters anymore

New: I wrote about how, with all the post-Trump media focus on “misinformation” & “fake news,” that movement has bizarrely ignored the fact that a major driver of “disinfo” in the US is police depts and cop unions theappeal.org/police-disinfo… We are living through a wave of outright disinfo spread directly by cops—they are claiming crime is rampant or spiking (it is not) & falsely blaming these issues on some mass “defunding” that did not occur & on other reforms or even vaccine mandates theappeal.org/police-disinfo…
