Some pre-birthday reflection on my core believes 👇 LOVE: In contrast to money, love is a resource that grows as you spend it and depletes as you keep it to yourself (Machado’s maxim). Fun is similar to love.

1/ That are many products across various industries that are addictive.

Opioids in healthcare
Sugar in food

1/ I am a big fan of distributed teams. They foster more thoughtfulness, less drama, better employer/employee matches and better business economics.

I want to share a thread with what I have learned building and running distributed teams in the last year or so. 2/ The first thing to point out is the growing acceptance of the model in Silicon Valley:

- It used to be a deal breaker. IIn that last 18 months it has become acceptable, sometimes, desirable.
- Driver: the high cost of living which has made it hard to work for equity in SV

1/ Today we’re publically launching One Fix (getonefix.com) a service to help people change what they eat.

A thread below on why we started One Fix, and who is it for. 2/ If you can change what you eat, you control a master switch for chronic disease. Diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, and many cancers are all downstream from what you put in your mouth. And if these diseases are part of your family history, the switch is even bigger.

1/ If we want to have positive change -- say eat better or be kinder -- we should always strive to play games where honesty is the optimal strategy. Below, a thread on the topic 2/ When we are in single player mode - alone with our thoughts - we lie to ourselves all the time.

We tell ourselves stories to explain away events and behaviors in our favor all the time.

We find ways to hides from ourselves so we don’t register what we see.

1/ Why we eat food that makes us fat. TLDR: The foods that make us fat - refined carbs, especially sugar - are addictive. Let me try and map out the addictive pathway:

Consume sugar and you get an intense dopamine release (reward) 2/ Reward leads to dependence, binging and tolerance.

Dependence on internally releasing dopamine turns into withdrawal when absent, this turns into food addiction

Binging leads to sensitization to dopamine which leads to food addiction

Reward + Tolerance = escalation intake

1/ Why we get fat. A thread to summarize a couple books, avoiding technical language, in as few tweets as possible.

If you want to learn more, best books to get started are .@garytaubes Why We Get Fat, .@RobertLustigMD Fat Chance and .@davidludwigmd Always Hungry. 2/ We get fat because we take in too much energy, TOO FAST

- When we eat, food is turned into energy. Some of it is used to run the body, some is stored for future use, which the body does whenever possible

- The body is limited on how much energy it can use at any given time.

1/ to understand a city, try to find its economic core. This likely explains what is unique about that city.

I will give you some examples that I am familiar with: 2/ Miami makes money out of excess capital coming mostly from the northeast in the US and from third world countries. Both monies are looking for comfort. The business of that city is to sell comfort (and its cousins, luxury, and safety)

1/ I’ve been thinking about how to be great at hiring for a product role.

I want to share a thread on the topic 2/ The necessary conditions when hiring a product role:

- Do you need incremental or step function work done?
- Does the person have building experiences or growing a user base?
- Are they connected with the mission?

1/ I think the medieval university is the best-designed working space 2/ A lot of the frustrations at work have to do with office spaces. I believe the monotony of schedules, the mindless “busy” work that happens at the desk, the constant interruptions and the endless meetings are all a *consequence* of our current ideal of open spaces offices

1/ I had the most peculiar experience traveling and listening to several Lyft and Uber drivers from different places in the last couple of days. I was amazed at how their personal stories wonderfully connect to each other and to me. 2/Lately I have not been particularly inclined to share in social media but this felt worth noting down for my own benefit and, I think, worth sharing here
