Here it is, perhaps the strangest incident we've encountered on @thisdaypod. Dwight Eisenhower was an avid golfer, but White House squirrels kept tearing up his putting green. So he began to wage an increasingly bizarre and dark war on the critters... podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thi… Almost immediately, he turned to violence. There are reports that he told his top aide -- if you see a squirrel, shoot it on sight. There were rumors that Ike himself would ride around the WH lawn in a golf cart with a shotgun, going after squirrels and pigeons. And then..

Today on @thisdaypod we get to one of our most requested stories -- the time the US almost nuked itself in eastern North Carolina. It's also my nomination for "most understated roadside sign of all time." Feels like this doesn't really capture it! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thi… As the transport plane broke up, the way the bombs fell out of the plane generally simulated what would happen if... they had been deployed intentionally... It's a bit in dispute how close the bombs came to detonating, but they did go through several of the arming steps.

I’m a couple days late to this but I’m not going to let a discourse-about-the-state-of-podcasting pass me by. Love that discourse. By and large this is a good piece but I think it misses on a few key marks. 1/ theguardian.com/media/2021/aug… For one, it feels like it’s not exactly capturing this moment. Of course there’s a ton of consolidation and celebrity-chasing in podcasting right now. But, weirdly, I’m less despondent about the state of independent podcasting than I was a couple years ago. 2/
