Good morning from Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, where—bc of a retired police chief’s funeral at St. Mary Star of the Sea church (on Court Street)—the NYPD are summarily towing every legally parked car up & down the street. No notices were posted. Seems…illegal? To be clear I think there should be no curbside parking in NYC. Everyday. Including (especially) for cop cars. But this is BS. What an $11 billion budget buys.

Here’s my new @NYTMag piece. It's about the biggest disaster in the
history of the music business, which was hushed up by the world’s
largest record company. nytimes.com/2019/06/11/mag… Thought I'd add some post-scripts to this piece—a quick survey of a few music preservation topics/questions that wound up on the cutting room floor. These things are worth thinking about & (in a couple of cases, at least) might be profitably followed up on by journalists.

Biggest perverts in history: moralizing authors of late-19th c. anti-bicycle medical literature.

The Medical Age, Nov 1897 calls for criminalization of tandem bike-riding, which puts "a girl at puberty bent forward...& right behind her a fellow in a jumping bullfrog position." "Bicycling for Women from the Standpoint of the Gynecologist," 1895: the bicycle saddle may be tilted by the rider so as to create "constant friction over the clitoris and labia," a practice which fosters the "horrible habit...of masturbation."
