You can’t apply a method to other people’s problems and design a good solution

Great design is a selfish and ego driven pursuit

If you haven’t designed something for yourself, you can’t be a designer This is probably the worst part about the industry and design academia as a whole

It trains a whole group of students to look outside of themselves for problems rather than within

Zero personal projects. Just cookie cutter solutions that follow the same methods

Its been 7 months since joining Instagram as a product designer after university. There are things that were overlooked in school that I’m starting to realize. This is only a reflection of my own experience, but will hopefully help aspiring students... 1. A design exploration doesn’t have to start with a problem statement.

Instead, think about the job to be done that people would be hiring your feature/product for and build for that.
