Thank you for your kind tweets about losing my mom. I spent the week letting myself be sad, which felt like a luxury and necessity.

A few tips to share which may help others: 1/ I emailed friends and colleagues to let them know what had happened, and that I’d be slow replying to email. That worked. It took the pressure off. 2/

My mom died yesterday. She was my first proofreader, biggest champion and fiercest Scrabble opponent. She won money on Jeopardy! and sang at Carnegie Hall. She was remarkable. I’ll love her always. 1/ John as young boy sitting next to mother on steps Like so many Americans in 2020, I didn’t get to be near my mom as she died. A stranger held an iPad while I blubbered about how much I loved her. I’m grateful to that nurse while always mindful that this didn’t have to happen. 2/

Screenwriters! Don’t leave behind written materials after a pitch or meeting. Don't email them afterwards. If asked, just say no. You need to be paid for your writing. Because that's your actual job. #NoWritingLeftBehind No Writing Left Behind logo We talk in detail about why leave-behinds are such a problem in today's Scriptnotes -- Craig's umbrage is off the charts -- and also look at the writing you do for yourself when pitching. johnaugust.com/2018/no-writin…

Spent Saturday afternoon registering voters with @WhenWeAllVote at Long Beach Comic-Con, and I’ve got some thoughts on dudes and democracy.

photo by @bethshax who organized the day Cosplay superheroes registering to vote We were friendly but assertive, like a samples person at Wetzels Pretzels. If you looked like you were maybe 18, we asked if you were registered to vote in California.

Most people said they were. Hooray!

Jesse raises an interesting question. Let’s have a wee thread about pricing apps. Weekend Read is the app we make for reading screenplays on the iPhone. It melts PDFs and reformats the text. It’s literally the only app that does it. itunes.apple.com/us/app/weekend…
