Looking for some help with understanding xG. I think xG has the right intention, but I’m just not sure it tells us what we think it tells us. Us being coaches. Here is what I (think) I understand so far.

xG is essentially about probability. What is the probability that player A is going to score from situation B.
Through the collection of a lot of data points, the xG metric claims to have a pretty good idea of the probability of player A scoring from Situation B.
