There's never been a complete list of the people of Japanese descent incarcerated during WWII.

So a team of scholars & volunteers scoured 10's of 1000's of historical documents to come up with all the names — a way to give them back their identities.
laist.com/news/wwii-monu… In news stories, we use the estimate "more than 120,000" when describing the number of Japanese Am's and nationals incarcerated during WWII.

The team has now confirmed 125,284 people by name. The list is printed in a 1,000-page book that will be @jamuseum for the next year. A woman with glasses atop her head opens a large book while

Up until several years ago I didn't know one of the worst massacres of Chinese people happened in downtown LA.

So many times without knowing it, I've walked past spots where people were strung up and shot. Apparently, I wasn't alone.
laist.com/news/la-histor… LA's 1st Asian Am councilmember Mike Woo is part of a group trying to get a memorial built for victims of the 1871 massacre.

Hard to say where. The attacks played out across LA. But they started on Los Angeles Street, near El Pueblo. Only marker now is a sidewalk plaque.

CA has $5.2 BILLION to give out in rent relief. You can get 100% of back rent paid from April 2020 thru this Sept if you've struggled financially bc of covid & are income-eligible.

Applying can be hard if you don't know English well. Here’s ways to make it easier: If you text “rent” to 211211, you can get help figuring out if you qualify in one of 11 languages.

Aid is available to those who earn no more than 80 percent of the median income for their area. For a family of 4 in the LA area, that’s just under $95,000.

In Koreatown tonight, 50+ people walked the wide boulevards with the aim of deterring anti-Asian attacks.

Community patrols sprouted up in NY & the Bay Area months ago.

Efforts in LA have been slow to gain steam but that's changed after the Atlanta shootings. I was walking in Alhambra when this “Stop Asian Hate” flier fluttered to the ground in front of me from the group Compassion in SGV.

They’ve been canvassing the streets, letting people know they’ll chaperone you to your car or wait with you while you close shop.

San Gabriel Valley is coming out big tonight for the victims of the Atlanta shootings. I’d estimate 1000+ btw 2 vigils.

People feeling the loss hard in this swath of LA Cty, which has 1 of the country’s largest concentrations of Asian residents. 10 cities have Asian majorities. Leaders from these Asian-majority cities - Arcadia, Rosemead -- kick off a vigil in downtown San Gabriel.

Emotions run strong.

San Gabriel’s mayor Chin Ho Liao shouts “We have to stop the hate! We are Americans!”

Today Congress held its 1st hearing on violence & discrimination against Asian Ams...in 34 years.

The top-ranking Republican at the hearing grabbed headlines by apparently reminiscing about lynchings. But a lot else was going on. Some highlights: Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas went from lynchings to complaining the hearing was about policing free speech. He wants to criticize China.

NY Rep. Grace Meng - among those who've blasted racist rhetoric re: covid - wasn’t having it.

"We will not let you take our voice away from us.”

In the Atlanta-area shootings, police have charged the suspect w/8 counts of murder but are not calling race a factor at this time.

Why, when 6 victims were Asian? When his first target was Young's Asian Massage? (1/x) It’s a question a lot of us who’ve been covering attacks on Asians have been asking: what constitutes a hate crime? We’re told there has to be an underlying crime -- like murder or physical assault -- coupled with intent motivated by hate.

I’m in Little Tokyo where a rally against anti-Asian hate has started. It’s being hosted at the Japanese American National Museum. This courtyard is where Japanese Angelenos during WWII were rounded up before being put on buses for camps. Bill Fujioka, former CEO of LA County, was called Jap & beat up as a kid. He says now during covid, strangers tell him he brought the virus. He asked all communities & officials to take action. Not speaking up “is almost as bad as participating in this disgusting behavior.”

Hi from my quarantine hotel in Taipei. Here's the view for the next couple weeks....

Been following Taiwan's success at keeping covid-19 largely at bay — 7 deaths, 799 cases on an island of nearly 24 million. Getting to see firsthand how they've been doing it. Me pointing out the window ... 704 out of 799 confirmed covid cases in Taiwan have been "imported" by patients who'd come from abroad.

A NZ pilot created a tizzy this month by apparently infecting a Taiwanese woman, breaking a 253-day streak of no local transmission. taipeitimes.com/News/front/arc…

.@GavinNewsom just vetoed a bill passed by legislators to protect reporters who cover protests.

It would've barred law enforcement "from intentionally assaulting, interfering with or obstructing these duly authorized representatives." #SB629 SB 629 would've been a great signal for Newsom to send to Californians that he stands up for the #FirstAmendment.

Aside from protecting journalists from bodily harm, the bill would've made clear they can keep reporting after a dispersal order is called without harassment.

Checked out the big scoop the Brits had today.

@Channel4News says it obtained a huge database used by Trump's 2016 campaign & found 3.5M Black voters were microtargeted for online "deterrence." Trump 2016 had so much info on these voters the reporter was able to go their homes. Image Familiar parties emerge in @Channel4News report: Cambridge Analytica, which built the database & Facebook, which ran ads geared at Black voters like the Clinton super-predator commercial, viewed millions of x's.

FB wouldn't reveal how many of these targeted ads it ran in 2016.

Last night I was arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer by @LASDHQ after videotaping their interactions with protesters in Lynwood. This is what I remember and what I have on video and audio. I was at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood last night covering a press conference led by Sheriff Villanueva about the shooting of two deputies. One of the deputies is a mom of a 6 year-old. I felt my chest tighten thinking about the little boy.

Almost 2 weeks after 2 LASD deputies fatally shot #DijonKizzee protesters are meeting just yards from where he was killed in South LA. They’ll be marching soon. One organizer says: “We want the community to see us and feel us.” Today follows week of nightly protests outside South LA sheriff’s station. @NLG_LosAngeles held press conference outside station Friday to share witness accounts of police brutality.

Deputies responded by closing in on the group, 1 grabbed a legal observer. IG: vishal.p.singh

It's 6 p.m... still 104 degrees in Pasadena...and the city's sole cooling center is closing.

The next stop for some of the people who've been staying here is a shady spot or boarding an air-conditioned bus. It's actually only about a dozen people who've been using the cooling center each day.

Donald Oliver says he's tried to convince more of his homeless friends to come to NW Pasadena but some prefer to stay downtown. Others are afraid of leaving behind belongings.

More than 200 protesters outside South LA LASD station demanding justice for #DijonKizzee. About 75 deputies in riot gear stand guard yards away. Pastor Eddie Anderson stands on flatbed in front of LASD’s South LA station demanding whichever deputies killed #DijonKizzee be fired and prosecuted.

Before yesterday's mayhem in Beverly Hills, I was hearing about how the city's recently become LA's meeting ground for conservatives & Trump supporters.

A lot of it has to do with Shiva Bagheri. laist.com/2020/08/23/bev… Shiva Bagheri shared she’s a single parent & half-Iranian. Also a dance instructor/physical trainer/dogwalker who thinks Newsom, Garcetti and their pandemic orders are “tyrannical.”

Aside from attending rallies, her advice is that people arm themselves and create militias.

100’s of protests today across the land demanding Louis DeJoy resign as postmaster.

In Atwater Village, protesters say he’s done too much damage, worry about the processing of mail-in ballots and delays in getting medications DeJoy on Fri backpedaled on many of his proposed cuts to USPS but said he would be not be returning the 100’s of blue mail boxes and mail-sorters that’ve already been removed.

Election is 73 days away. Says Brigid LaBonge: “This is absolutely wrong.” Image
