Im not sure Dems position on fossil fuels matters @mattyglesias. Isnt the prob that this entire conversation is upside down? 1/ We're in this situation (and GOP response is bullshit) bc 1) the idea of "energy independence" when it comes to oil is completely illusory 2) oil companies are seizing the moment to generate profit not add supply 3) we have a demand problem that isnt being addressed. 2/

Americans can buy whatever type of car they want, but the GOP hating on EVs, especially American-made ones is not only nonsensical it’s downright anti-American. nytimes.com/2022/06/09/cli… 1/ More US made EVs, especially by US or allied countries means less reliance on oil means less $$$ going to Russia, Saudis, Iran, and on and on. 2/

Ive been pondering why the US hasnt done even MORE to link our #energy policy with national security and the war against Russian aggression in Ukraine and become the arsenal of clean energy for world’s democracies. thirdway.org/memo/making-th… 1/ This would serve three goals: 1) offset Europe’s reliance on Russia fossil fuels and nuclear fuel 2) accelerate the long-term shift to clean energy 3) stand up to petro-bullies as I wrote in @politico politico.com/news/magazine/… 2/

As @axios reported this AM there’s a new report by IEEFA on NuScale’s planned small reactor at INL. There are some salient and valid points but they are undermined by questionable conclusions, comparisons, and omissions in the report that raise concern abt confirmation bias. 1/ Several times through the report, the authors compare the long delays and failures of the construction of the AP1000 at Vogtle and Summer to the NuScale plant. Thats an unfair comparison: like great dane vs an elephant. Sure, both big in their context and both mammals but… 2/

Feels like a good day to talk about why we need carbon capture, utilization & storage technologies deployed widely in order to meet our climate goals. CCUS is going to be a big part of our decarbonization pathway. THREAD. 1/ First and foremost, scientists and experts widely agree we need CCUS to meet our net-zero commitments. Reports from both the @IEA & @IPCC have repeatedly shown that *NOT* utilizing CCUS significantly hurts our chances of meeting our climate goals. 2/

When Germany shuttered its nuclear plants (and kept its coal online) not only did it miss its carbon goals, it became more reliant on Russian natural gas for firm electricity. 1/ This is not working out well, as gas prices skyrocket and suspicions mount that the Russians may be manipulating supply. nytimes.com/2021/09/22/bus… 2/

More appalling evidence of misogyny and awfulness in ownership, coaching staff, and front office of @WashSpirit. washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/09… 1/ the @NWSL needs to be aggressive w this kind of bullshit. DC is already plagued by one of the worst owners in sport in Dan Snyder. And the NFL enables him. There is no way Baldwin should be allowed to keep owning a women’s professional soccer team. League needs zero tolerance. 2/

Okay, everyone, we’ve been crunching the BID numbers to see what’s in this deal and how it’ll impact clean energy and climate. Warning, this is a long 🧵 … 1/ This isn’t #HotFERCSummer (h/t @RepCasten) but the TL;DR verdict - this is the down payment for the US to go big, like really big, on clean energy, climate, and jobs. 2/

Oil companies respond to market trends. Using data from 2020 U.S. Energy & Employment Report we found from 2018 to 2019, clean energy jobs crew by twice the rate of overall job growth in the US. During that same time, fossil fuel jobs fell by 2.6%. usenergyjobs.org 8/ This is not going to happen by corporate action alone. Oil industry still has a LONG way to go. As late as 2018 only 0-5% of capital expenditures in major oil companies went to clean energy. cdp.net/en/investor/se… 9/

Last night climate got the spotlight. As I told @LFFriedman of @nytimes “This is a playbook that they keep coming back to, and it’s less and less effective. The economy is moving on and the public is moving on.” Here’s a thread w details; nytimes.com/2020/10/23/cli… 1/ @LFFriedman @nytimes Even major oil companies know that oil is on its way out. Increasingly, the world’s biggest oil companies are signaling that they will invest more in clean energy and reduce their emissions. 2/

Former opp researcher here ✋🏼. Also worked and researched variety of Presidential and Senate archival records, and worked at Presidential Library. @ASFried gives a good summary of why the @nytimes cal for a review of DE records is absurd. 1/ Its a very time-consuming and delicate process to go through records even when they’ve been properly archived. To review a ton of records that have not would take a very long time to do properly while protecting the documents. 2/
