A few questions worth asking yourself if you have a newsletter: 1. Why are you writing a newsletter?

It’s amazing how many people don’t really know.

If you don’t know what you hope to get out of your newsletter, chances are you’re not going to get anything out of it.

Not all clients are worth taking on.

I’ve built a 6-figure consulting business by being strategic about who I work with.

Here are 11 questions to ask yourself before taking on a client: 1. How did this client discover you?

The more familiar a client is with your work and outlook, the more likely they are to be a good fit for you.

Because they already have a sense of what you’re about.

A newsletter helps with this - it's a great filter for clients.

Your newsletter should NOT be about your podcast.

Do you give a lot of free value to your audience?

Great! 💪

But do you then feel uncomfortable asking them to pay for something?

Not great. 😢

Here's how to overcome those feelings: Let's start with a key concept:

Selling people something new isn't the same as taking something free away from them.

You're simply offering them something additional.

And that doesn't negate the goodwill you get from all the free value you provide.

I used to see everything as black and white.

That perspective was really helpful…

Until it wasn’t.

Here’s one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in the last decade: For most of my life I saw things as black and white.

I knew what was right or wrong.

What was the smart or dumb way to do things.

And that I was the kind of person who did this, but not that.

There was no gray area.

And that approach to life and work really helped me.

Want to stand out from other writers?

Here's what it takes: 👇 1. Authenticity

Got a minute?

Want to use it to learn something valuable?

Here are 5 creative ways I sneak in a little extra learning throughout the day: 1. You know those times when you reach for your phone to fill a minute of empty time?

Like when you're waiting in line?

Or during commercial breaks?

Keep a book near you and reach for the book instead of your phone in those moments.

An exercise to try:

Write 10 sentences that start with "I want..."

Write 10 related sentences that start with "I don't want..."

You'll learn a lot.

Here are the sentences I came up with: 1. I want people who read my tweets to be able to use them to improve something.

I don't just want them to say, "That's interesting."

Are you SURE your messaging aligns with your goals?

You're about to find out.

Do a 5-minute messaging audit by checking these 10 things: 1. Check the bios of the last 10 people who followed you on Twitter.

What does it seem like they want?

Are they the kind of people you want to serve?

If not, why do you think you attracted them and not the ones you really want to reach?

If I had to teach someone to write a better newsletter...

Here are the first 10 things I'd tell them to do: 1. Do a word count on a recent issue.

Force yourself to remove at least 20% of the words and compare it to the original.

You'll realize the reduced version is stronger.

And that much of what you've been doing is unnecessary.

If I had to launch a new Twitter account from scratch...

Here are the first 10 things I'd do: 1. I'd write a one-sentence description for myself of why I was starting the account.

Like this:

"I'm starting this account to help X people get Y result which will help me get Z result."

Clarity of purpose is key to success.

4 concepts from successful creative entrepreneurs stuck with me this week.

Smart stuff about:

• Thread writing
• Newsletter monetization
• YouTube best practices
• Sales copy

Here they are: 1. Use standalone tweets to market-test thread topics.

@thejustinwelsh posts list tweets and the ones that perform best he expands into threads.

Not surprisingly, they work because he already knows the topics resonate with his audience.

Stop trying to figure out how to be like other people.

How to model their work.

Mimic their talent.

Or thrive in their shadow.

The world doesn't need another one of "them."

We need YOU. There’s something about you.

A quality you have.

A skill you’ve refined.

A perspective completely unique to you.

The world needs you to find it, develop it, and share it.

Most business book titles are lies.

I wish they'd be more honest.

Like these: "This Book Is Just A Collection Of Repurposed Blog Posts"

From the author of a blog no one read...comes a book no one wanted.

Want more people to share your tweets?

If you can answer these 7 questions, the rest is easy.

😉 1. How will sharing your tweet help the person who shares it?

The more benefit someone gets from sharing, the more likely they are to do it.

Does sharing your tweet create an opportunity for THEM?

Does it make THEM seem smart or helpful?

Does it unlock something valuable?

Motown Records chief Berry Gordy insisted that songs grab people in the first 10 seconds.

Writers can learn a lot from that.

The next time you’re going to write something, listen to the first 10 seconds of these songs for some inspiration to grab people’s attention… See how this one draws you in?
