🧵 Some highlights from this article lamenting how Covid threw a wrench in people’s summer plans.

The number of people voluntarily telling the WaPo that they got on a plane while Covid+ is disturbing.

washingtonpost.com/health/2022/09… Deborah and Delmer Harris tested+ midway through a European cruise and were forced to isolated for 10 days in Vienna.

They are trying to get $10k reimbursed from travel insurance.

“But they don’t regret their decision.

I’m old enough to remember late summer 2021, when base rate fallacy was all the rage.

Its rise coincided with the Provincetown outbreak and data from Israel showing waning efficacy.

Now here we are April 2022 and it’s suddenly making the rounds once again 🤔

Earned myself a block from MK for adding some screenshots in the comments of the tweet below.

Coming from someone with her position and following, it really is important to lay out this timeline in full though 🗓

Let’s get started …

1/ March 9 … party time! 🥳

Let the finger pointing begin!

1/ Actually, the WH had concluded privately by early January that they needed more Covid money.

They should have been briefing Congress on the urgent needs for MONTHS … not *weeks* @benwakana46

So, apparently Katie Couric did an interview with Fauci for her social media channels that was posted yesterday.

You can find the whole interview here, but there were some parts that stood out.

Re: herd immunity

“You might want enough herd immunity so that you get infected, maybe, but you don’t get sick. So it’s sort of like a version of herd immunity against severe disease, as opposed to herd immunity against any infection.”

Yeah, that’s not a thing …

🛳 Large outbreak on the @RoyalCaribbean Symphony of the Seas happening right now. The one doctor and two nurses on onboard are overwhelmed.

Royal Carribean refusing to return to port per CDC rules. I know that many of us on Twitter are already hyper aware of the risks involved with cruising, but this audio recording and the real time account of what is happening on this ship is important. Thank you to Connor for sharing this!

A few weeks ago, I tweeted about the seemingly odd announcement of Emily Burns’ run for Congress.

She is a conservative Republican, known for her strong anti-mask views, running in the deep blue MA-4 district.

1/ As I noted, Burns’ campaign is being run by Axiom Strategies.

They are a conservative firm that handled Ted Cruz’s failed 2016 presidential bid.

Burns’ website is even registered directly to Axiom Strategies, who created it on September 7.

A popular talking point at the moment is that this is now a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”.

As some of us know, these claims are based on misleading math. When we see a number like 99%, it’s usually because a statistically irrelevant (far larger) denominator is being used.

1/
Frustratingly, @CDCgov and local public health agencies have intentionally not collected breakthrough data, or withheld it from the public.

Fortunately, @lapublichealth gave us a peek into the current rate of breakthrough cases yesterday by accident.
